Suspect I'm being thick here, but I can't seem to find a way to move an existing character (generated before the campaign was set up) into a campaign without recreating it?
I know I can create an unassigned character within the campaign and then assign it, but if there's a way to just move or allocate an existing creation that isn't assigned to any campaign I can't see it.
I'm not the DM of the campaign (actually getting to play for once), but have the DM's Master subscription level and am wondering if that's the problem (maybe the DM can't have their own PC allocated to a campaign that they 'own'?). Am using the campaign setup purely as a convenient way to keep all the PCs info and notes together - the actual DM can use the public notes section to feed us info as required and keep private info to themselves.
If I have to recreate the character I will, but I'm lazy and would prefer not to :) If it's not possible to do so then I'll submit as a FREQ because I think it's not an unlikely situation to be in - who doesn't have a stable of yet-to-be-played character concepts kicking around?
Also, if you have a lot of characters (and/or a small screen), make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the list of existing characters after you have chosen the character you want to add: there’s a “use this character” button there. (It may have a different name; I don’t remember exactly). This tripped me up for a while, as the > in the character “button” on the selection screen made me think that just tapping that “button” should do it and/or take me to a different screen.
Yes, I've copied/pasted the invite link, but that only takes me to the campaign area that I had already created with no option to add the existing character to it, probably because it's all been created under the same login - I've got another completely different game that I'm running that I can send the link to my players to such that they can create their characters but I haven't finished setting up the campaign options, public notes info, and so on yet so haven't played around with those settings - fairly sure I understand how the invite link works: prompt them to login/create a DDB account, then into a character gen area, and then add that to the campaign.
But the invite link effectively being sent to myself just opens the existing campaign that I've invited myself to (and that I own, having got the DM Master subscription access - if there's a way to select "I'm a player, not the DM" or effectively pass the DM control of the campaign over to a different account once the campaign structure has been created, reducing my access to that campaign to that of a mere player participant I assume the invite link should work normally, but I can't see a way to restrict myself to a lower permissions level).
My suspicion is that I've gone about this in the wrong way - I can't see any reason why what I'm trying to do shouldn't be possible, albeit not using the software as completely intended - I'm the one with the DM Master subscription and all the content that I wanted to share with the rest of the group even though I'm not actually the DM for this campaign.
By my understanding the actual DM should be able to access the PC character sheets using a regular account and hence have access only to the content I've shared and the non-DM side of things. That should allow him to use the public notes section as that can be accessed by anyone, unless it's read only to everybody and only writeable by the specified DM account?
I could go about this another way by dumping the placeholder campaign I had set up to store all the other players' character sheets in, go back to my PC sheet and then from there create a new campaign for it to join as I suspect that will work but that undoes the work I'd done in setting up placeholder unassigned characters for the other players to edit to their exact PC builds. Not a huge wasted effort, and probably serves me right for trying to be too clever, but if there's a means to achieve what I'm after without having to recreate work I'd appreciate it :)
Thanks for the timely responses though - hadn't really had the chance to check back in again until today.
Would I be wrong in wanting a button accessible from the character generator 'edit' screen for 'join campaign', prompting for the invite code? That's the logical place to my mind where I started looking for the means to do what I'm trying to achieve. Strikes me that's not an unreasonable FREQ to ask for from my (albeit limited) understanding of the software and back-end database structure (many, many moons ago I was a DBA for a while - understand the theory, never liked the practice - I'm a sys/network admin in practice though it's been a good few years since I was involved in that as a profession. Running a FLGS has different user issues...)
I’m not sure why this isn’t working for you. It sounds like you yourself have two different accounts here? If so, is there a reason for that?
I can tell you what I do, which works for me:
-I go to Creations>Campaigns
-I click on the campaign I want to add a character to
-I click on “copy link” under and slightly to the left of the invite link box
-I passe that link in a new tab: it takes me to a page that says Join CAMPAIGN NAME
-On that page, I can choose to create a new character, claim an unassigned character (if there are any) or choose to add one of my characters to the campaign.
Whoever creates the campaign is automatically the dungeon master in D&D Beyond
I would strongly suggest that the actual DM create the campaign so they can do whatever character management is needed as well as make use of the private notes
the Campaign Creator / Dungeon Master and the person with the Master Tier subscription can be different people.
the spoilers are just to collapse the how-to pictures
For your DM, they will want to click "Copy Link" and then email / send that out to all the players
Then, you as the player, when you follow that link in, should be presented by a screen for what character you want to play. Either click "Create a Character" or select one of your existing ones below that. In this case, I want to join as ZimBrimble TurboBlaster, so I would click on his name and then below that (scroll down if you have lots of characters like I do) click "Join With This Character"
the DM can also follow the join link in and should be presented with the same character selection screen.
if you just copy and paste the URL from your web browser instead of the join link, you will not get this screen!
Then finally, you as the one with the Master Tier Subscription would click on "Enable Content Sharing"
Thanks for all of the replies - been sick for a couple of days and not been able to check in.
Houligan - I hadn't clocked that the campaign creator automatically became the DM (though with hindsight it's obvious that should be the case). It appears that anyone with the role of the DM cannot invite themselves to add a character into the campaign, which is kind of what I suspected, as I can invite a sceondary account I set up for testing purposes but not the one where the PC is actually located. I'd also not worked out how as a player I could share the content to the group from my subscription level. Will get the (actual) DM to create the campaign and then everything ought to work as intended. Thankyou again for the detailed explanation - very clear!
The DM should also be able to use the join link. Anyone (DM or player) who goes to that address will be prompted with the create / use existing screen.

A DM can use the join link to add characters. I've done it. It is intended for adding unassigned characters or DMPCs.

Have you visited the campaign invite link? It should prompt you to join with a previously created character.
Also, if you have a lot of characters (and/or a small screen), make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the list of existing characters after you have chosen the character you want to add: there’s a “use this character” button there.
