I found it, like I assume most of us did, through Critical Role. Sam Riegel's ads always made me laugh, and I thought, oh, maybe there's something to this tool. Checked it out, and fell in love!
I think this makes me the oddball here but I've never watched somebody stream D&D in my life nor have I ever listened to a D&D podcast. I just like digital RPG books in general and I think DND Beyond has a really slick presentation for their website and their phone app. It's probably the most well put together online resource for an RPG that I've seen personally.
A while back, we looked for some way to have an online game for remote players in short order. Someone mentioned Roll20 and DnDBeyond. There were only 2 sessions before nobody seemed to be able to attend any more including the DM. OboeCrazy joining the team here reminded me that I have an account, and I explored further after taking a second look. Having time to sit down and explore made a lot of difference comparing the rush-to-get-going attempt initially.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
A friend at work who is a rabid D&D player. He and his friends play online because they are all over the world. And he was telling me about it and when I asked how you do it online he said "with D&D Beyond" and showed it to me. Which I thought was cool and forgot about, since I have not played D&D (pen and paper D&D vs. doing some kind of computer game like NWN) in probably 30 years.
Then another friend who used to play D&D with me said he would like to start again and so did I, and the friend at work said "I will DM something for you" and told us to make accounts here... and here I am. Our campaign hasn't started yet so I just got set up here like 2 weeks ago.

Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
I've been here since the first day of public beta. I don't think there was a public alpha. I think I found out about it from some random news article that, of course, called it an "app" instead of a website. The actual app wasn't even announced back then.
I was using an online encounter generator to generate potential level-appropriate enemies, and it suggested a monster from a book I didn't have. When googling for that monster I found DNDbeyond where I could just buy the book online, and I've been here since.
I don’t remember for certain, but I probably heard about it on the enworld forums. I signed up for the public beta at the very beginning and have been here since.
Re: BigLizard: Consider that you're not paying DDB strictly for the WotC content. You're paying for the thousands of work hours that go into digitizing, cross-linking, tooltip creation, and coding to make all the tools functional. Expecting to get that for free when you buy a book from WotC (which is an entirely different company) is basically asking an entire team of web developers to work just for the "exposure".
I was working on my tabletop campaign one day when I didn't have my books with me, and was googling various info (monsters, spells, etc.) DnD Byond was one of the more useful sites that kept popping up.

I'v heard about it before seeing Sam's ads on critical role (I can't remember how I heard of it though) but I didn't start using it until last year when he reminded me of it.
I heard about D&D Beyond from James Haeck, who is now our Lead Writer. But at the time a few years ago we were both just fans of the idea! I was especially excited for the idea of having everything on my laptop, as I remember using the 4e character creator online and being able to print out power cards with the character sheet was a HUGE help.

Similar to me. I found it via Google some time before CR campaign 2 when searching for something then forgot all about it. Refound it after watching CR.

I don't even remember. I think it might have been an in-page ad on another website or a youtube ad. I joined DDB before Campaign 2 started.

Check out the Roll20 extension for Chrome. It adds Click to Roll buttons for just about everything in D&D Beyond that will send the roll to Roll20.

My DM was into critical role and was already using DDB to DM other groups when my group started playing.
I found it after a Google search looking for something to help with character creation.
I found it by searching for an ap to organize D&D on my phone.

I found it by accident, last night, when I did a search of a 2e AD&D setting. Happily surprised.
