But then nobody would ever hit the max so the whole system falls apart.
Can't see players being complacent with taking 1s all the time when the max is rolled (your psi-ability lasts 1 minute vs 6?).
But maybe you're right. A rule would be needed that auto taking 1s could only be done a certain number of times a day which just adds more clunkiness and bookkeeping.
I wish the sorcerers level 18 was something like "when you roll the psionic die, you may roll twice and choose the preferred result". Something to make you feel totally in control of your powers, even if there was still an element of luck to when you gained or lost them.
I honestly really don’t like this. I usually love the UA, but this feels clunky and weird, and not what I expected from psionic. The aberrant mind was probably my favorite UA ever, an now they butchered it.

That might work if the Sorcerer was supposed to be the main “Psionicist,” but I get the feeling it’s supposed to be like a “1/3caster version” of a full Psionicist.

Great idea, but feel it should be before 18th level.

Is it weird that I hadn't put together that the psi sorcerer was an aberrant mind replacement? Looking at it again it totally makes sense, I understand how people would displeased with the aberration on the aberrant mind but it still looks like an enjoyable subclass. I at first only considered it a replacement for the wizard, more like a bit of a mix for the two. To be honest psionics seem a better fit for a sorcerer subclass that a wizard as things stand right now.
So with this change up we have rogue, fighter, sorcerer, with solid psi subclasses. We also have barbarian and monk with psi ish subclasses (at least similar to older versions of certain psionic subsets). Any I am forgetting?

My hope is that they abandoned those spells to tun them into Psionic powers for a full class using the Psi Talent Die mechanic in place of Spellcasting altogether, as they were originally Psionic powers in the first place.
The Psi Die as a concept is fine for untrained ‘feelings’ based Psions or emotion based Psions. But if you are trying to create a type of Psion who can control their power, such as the analytical mind Psion or the meditative Psion, it breaks the fantasy.
The Psi Die works well a a feature SOME classes get, but it doesn’t work as the unifying mechanic of psionics.
The Psi Die is also currently broken. You either have 2 to five uses depending on your level, which is reasonable, versus infinite uses, which is definitely not reasonable. But this is UA, so sometimes broken things get through.
I think a better psi-die mechanic would be if a player chooses to maximize the die for one round then the die reduces, but it doesn't get reduced/improved at random.
Maybe something reserved for a full psionic class.

I was thinking of homebrewing a 'Burnout' feat where if you critted on your Psi Die you could choose to 'explode' it, but if you did so you would definitely lose it afterwards (probably with the restoration options I mentioned above).
I also think that if it was a full class there should be a level 20 feature like with Bardic inspiration, where you get the die back if you don't have it when you roll initiative. I don't feel like they're too likely to make that full class, though, and I don't think they'd add this in to subclasses, which is unfortunate.

Yeah, a true Psionicist.

Yes this please
I hope they do that and then just bring back the poor aberrant mind
For folks who are unhappy about the possibility of losing the use of your Talent die, what do you think about either of these options:
Birgit | Shifter | Sorcerer | Dragonlords
Shayone | Hobgoblin | Sorcerer | Netherdeep

edit: hit post by accident during copy and paste
I would imagine that a full class based around an expanded version of this feature would have more interactivity.

There isn't going to be a full psionicist class.
JC didnt rule it out when asked:

Wishful thinking, but not giving up hope. There's no plans to continue mystic development. Leaves it open for something else.

The latest UA seems like they're working hard to give us viable psionic characters, but not necessarily to give us a psion class.
