Force leaping feels more jedi than psionic. Levitation or Matrix like wall movement strikes me as being more psionic.
The Jedi are basically the preeminent psions in popular culture, at least in terms of telekinetics.
I get that, I just don't like the idea of spamming die rolls for random jump distances.
+1 for this. If anything it should be something like, you shrink your Psi dice to cast the Jump spell on yourself, or even get a stronger version of Jump for a single action.
I like the unpredictable benefit of this Psionics iteration, but in my experience you only jump when you know you can make it, and if you're really a foot or two short with your base jump distance, you aren't going to leave "make it or fall to your death" up to a dice roll.
But you wouldn’t though. The way the calculation works you are guaranteed a minimum 4 foot jump with even a 12 Int. And you can consciously choose to improve that by upping your score. I don’t like the idea of spamming rolls for jumps either, but even the gambler in me isn’t gonna take the chance of loosing everything by spamming the jump button if I don’t really need it.
And while it’s called a jump, one could easily also imagine it as like the force shunt from Force Unleashed.
The original Psychic Warrior subclass was boring and punished you for using psionic races (Gith) or the Telekinetic feat since there were so many ways to get an invisible mage hand and stacking the abilities just equaled to wasted potential.
I really like the new die mechanic though I don't think I read what the die size limit is. As it stands, just reading the Fighter subclass, there isn't a limit to die size if you keep rolling 1s(unless I missed it).
Changing the Die's Size. If you roll the highest number on your Psionic Talent die, it decreases by one die size after the roll. This represents you burning through your psionic energy. For example, if the die is a d6 and you roll a 6, it becomes a d4. If it's a d4 and you roll a 4, it becomes unusable until you finish a long rest. Conversely, if you roll a 1 on your Psionic Talent die, it increases by one die size after the roll, up to its starting size. This represents you conserving psionic energy for later use. For example, if you roll a 1 on a d4, the die then becomes a d6. Whenever you finish a long rest, your Psionic Talent die resets to its starting size. When you reach certain levels in this class, the starting size of your Psionic Talent die increases: at 5th level (d8), 11th level (d10), and 17th level (d12). Psi Replenishment. As a bonus action, you can calm your mind for a moment and restore your Psionic Talent die to its starting size. You then can't use Psi Replenishment again until you finish a long rest.
For the psi jump ability do you think increasing jump distance by your current dice size for minutes equal to your dice roll would be a better way to make the actual jump distance less variable?
Also I really like the psi dice mechanic and would love to see a full class built out of it too!

Would you also include the clause that the extra distance only counts for 1ft?

I am curious what it would look like without the die size increased being capped at your base size. Low level has a string of bad/good luck and ends up with a d12 for a day. Could be a fun funny power spike.

This is one of my core issues is the wide variability of uses.
It's clunky mechanically and makes no sense thematically.
"You're a master of your mind.... Unless you roll a 6"
The thing I dislike the most about the die mechanic is that it makes psionics, which is a mental ability that you're supposed to be able to train and harness to your benefit, completely random, and never gets easier to control.

Again, maybe it helps to think of it as exertion. You strain your psychic muscles (roll max) and can't do quite as much. You take it easy and conserve your energy while tapping into your mental wellspring (roll 1) and you recover some of it.

I didn't like the idea of psionics before, and this looks like it will not change my mind. the fact is, there's no single psionics system that will make all the psionics fans like it, and there is no psionics system that will make psionics look to be a meaningful addition to the game. The haters are going to just ban psionics outright because they don't want to learn a new system/have it pollute their high fantasy visuals. A lot of the fans will hate whatever is put in front of them because it's not their vision.
I've been playing since 2e and I don't think anything outside of 4e in general has ever been more divisive than psionics. The only way psionics was /ever/ going to fly well is if it was part of the initial release, and even then a lot of folks would hate it.
The /one/ thing I liked from the other UA on the topic was the aberrant sorc, and that's been completely destroyed, so as far as I am concerned, WotC can flush this article right alongside the Mystic.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

This ^ is a much more eloquent way to say exactly how i had been feeling about all of this. I feel like psionics would really not have its own identity, especially in this edition of the game. I understand that it is supposed to be "mastery over your mind and therefor the world" or whatever but so far all it has done is borrowed from other classes in a not-cool way. I guarantee that anything you want to get out of a Psionic class can successfully be done with a gentle finesse of re-flavoring other spells and abilities.
I think the one part I do like, dice up dice down mechanic makes me think of psychics in movies. Use their powers too much and they get a brain bleed (or something similar). Very much, we are strong but we are inconsistent in our display of power. Even minds will eventually break under enough strain.

It does not help that all movement is made in 5' increments so any number that is not a multiple of 5 is a useless number.

Isn’t that what rounding is for? And it doesn’t have to work that way for theater of the mind groups.
