I think a better psi-die mechanic would be if a player chooses to maximize the die for one round then the die reduces, but it doesn't get reduced/improved at random.
Maybe something reserved for a full psionic class.
I was thinking of homebrewing a 'Burnout' feat where if you critted on your Psi Die you could choose to 'explode' it, but if you did so you would definitely lose it afterwards (probably with the restoration options I mentioned above).
I also think that if it was a full class there should be a level 20 feature like with Bardic inspiration, where you get the die back if you don't have it when you roll initiative. I don't feel like they're too likely to make that full class, though, and I don't think they'd add this in to subclasses, which is unfortunate.
Honestly I would rather go this approach. Give more of a benefit for losing the die than just hitting the max number. Right now it feels stupid to drop a die just for getting 1 extra point of damage/hp prevention/etc...
I enjoy the die feature but I don't think it should be a wizard subclass. I feel it should be only for Sorc or its on class, with a spell list that should be locked for that sub class or class. Wizards or other classes should be able to access it via a feat or something.
I liked the Psionic Wizard subclass. I also really liked the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer. I really want them to abandon the current version of the sorcerer, and go back to the original spellcaster subclasses.

What did you like about the Aberrant Mind? I have to say, I’m not sorry to se it go one bit. I was not looking forward to having to accept it at my table if it ever went official. As DM, I reserve the right to disapprove UA, but I hate to block actual material and I didn’t care for that one particularly. What was it you liked about it?
I liked the fact that they had added spells know, their natural armor just seemed super awesome in flavor, it just made sense for an aberrant sorcerer, I liked that they could use sorcery points instead of spell slots for their spells, and their last 2 abilities were way better than the current version in my opinion.
It makes it look good to play a sorcerer, did essentially everything I think sorcerers should be able to do. They also felt like an awesome sorcerer type.
I understand the newest version is a broader range of how you got your powers, but I really preferred it when you had to be warped by an aberration or the Far Realm in some way.

I liked the flavor of the subclass and how it was reflected in the abilities. I guess it was mainly how it felt, and it's very distinct in flavor and mechanics for the newest version.

I just wish that they kept the AC bonus you got from AM Sorcerer and the bonus Psionic Spells added. Those were the main draw for me, and now they are gone. I like the new Die feature. But i will sorely miss that bonus to AC..

I liked the spells it got, and the free mage armor without having to be a dragon sorc.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
1st) I won't buy any WotC product which includes Psionics if they don't a Mystic (Psionicist) class in such material. Periodf. I'll go with a 3rd party source book.
2nd) The whole concept of the Psi Die is stupid. It is a complexity that will just add to what the DM has to keep track of in a game session. Most player's can be trusted to keep honest track of such a die, but there is always one in a group who can't be. They should have stuck with the concept of the Psionic Focus. It was far simpler.
3rd) I do like that they are experimenting with the concept of Feat Trees.
4th) I really, really HATE WotC for forcing sites like DnDBeyond to archive older UA materials that they have gone through a major effort to implement. Look at what DnDBeyond has gone through to implement some of the articles. WotC is blatantly blocking us from using whatever material we want to use on an OFFICIAL site like DnDBeyond. To continue to use archived material on new characters, you have to go back to old pen and paper tracking, or an offline character builder like HeroLab where you can continue to use the old UA material. Archiving is one of my few pet peeves with DnDBeyond. It is not there fault. It is something FORCED upon them by WotC. It reminds me far too much of the online character builder that WotC had for 4e. That piece of junk ruined so many of my character builds that I eventually gave up on 4e altogether and won't play or DM it ever.
To me, it seems that WotC is going back to the way they were with 4e. Until I discovered DnDBeyond, through Nerdarchy, I consistently used HeroLab for character building. I did a lot of scripting for the 5E Community Pack and didn't have to worry about anyone taking away what I used in my games. Since my minor stroke in 2016, I have lost much of my ability to focus and code so DnDBeyond was a godsend. Now, despite my issues, I may have to go back to HeroLab for the older UA materials I want to continue using. Despite what WotC wants. Have you noticed, that though they don't want wsites like DnDBeyond to allow us to use old UA materials, they still have them on the Unearthed Arcana website as of the last time I looked?

Watch your back, conserve your ammo, and NEVER cut a deal with a dragon!
1. I buy all of their 5e books, so I will personally end up buying the book no matter what.
2. If you don't like the psi dice because you don't trust the player's abilities to keep track of it, just don't allow it in your games. If a player comes along that actually can keep track of it and doesn't cheat, you should probably allow them to play it, unless there's another reason why you don't want them to use that.
3. I do like that. Feat trees is something I've homebrewed for a different feats in my games, and the players loved it. I homebrewed one for a character with an aberrant dragonmark, and they liked it.
4. I don't like that they have to make new code for each UA that comes out, only for most of it to be scrapped fairly soon, but I don't think they're required to put UA on the site.

You can “homebrew” a private version for yourself. When a new UA gets implemented, I make a character just to sit on in case it gets Archived so all I have to do is copy the character over and over if I want to play that archived stuff.

That was what I didn’t like.
You were going to veto it just because of that?
I thought that whole slime-and-tentacle thing was pretty dumb narratively. That Warlock too. Flush them both of you ask me. I can veto UA for any damned reason I want, it’s my living room. I don’t like vetoing official materials though. I also don’t want creepy gross ****** stuff in my campaign setting. I worked my ass off for decades on this setting since 2e. I love calamari, just not as a PC. It would ruin my own verisimilitude in my own campaign world to the point I wouldn’t want to run game anymore.
I love tentacles slime monsters for villains and monsters and such. But I most definitely have players that would take tentacles places I don’t want to have to narrate. 🤮
