On Monday, I went to a learn to play D&D group at a local public library. It was interesting but a lot of detail! Are there any other seniors out there who play? I’m recently unemployed and need things to do to get me out of the house! Many thanks!
There have to be seniors who play. The game came out in ‘74, if a 30 yo started playing it then and still plays they’d be 80. Statistically speaking there have to be seniors who play.

We absolutely exist. I'm 52 and have been playing for over 40 years. We are the O.G. generation technically so, if you poke around the local hobby store, you'll likely make some senior connections.

Young 'un... but yeah, have been here since I got my red box in 1984! Never stopped, just had decades with more playing and some with less. The last decade has really been good!

What do you define as a "senior"? I'd say that the guys who invented D&D are all seniors and I think still play the game. The guys who played back in the 70s and 80s are still playing and they are close to being seniors if not already there.

I mean. The guy who created the game is so old he died (not from old age. I believe it was a heart attack, but still). Seniors can definitely play dnd. Or any other game for that matter.

Umm, Gygax and Arneson are both dead. Maybe some of the others from that time are still around? Though Jim Ward also just recently died.
Holy 💩!!! I hadn’t heard that. 💩! Just a couple of weeks ago too at the age of 72. Damn. In case anyone else was apparently living under a rock: (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_M._Ward).

Yeah, it’s pretty sad.
For those who don’t know, spell Jim Ward backwards, and you get Drawmij, of the spell instant summons. That’s how influential he was on the game.
And to the OP: you should definitely play. The big trick is finding a group that works for you. There is a lot of detail, yes. But once you get a few basics down it gets much less complicated.
My main game group age ranges from 14-74. If anything playing D&D and other role playing games is one of those activities that assist/support intergenerational communication and even community. To play well, everyone has to sit and listen to everyone else's contribution, and consequently bonds are easily formed this way. Of course, I understand the desire to play within one's own age group too, and the games I play with folks in my peer age tend to be different than my more age diverse group, but I think that's more because of the younger not older players at the table.

Yep, exactly. I'll admit I'm the oldest at our table. I started playing with some of the grad students in the college and as they moved off to start their careers we just shifted to online easily enough. I do miss rolling dice and taking snacks for face to face play but we still meet for about 4 hours every week. It's good to have an age mix. We've picked up a retired gentleman last year and I may be including one of my college buddies from the 80's now that he is slowing down, if being a new grandpa doesn't affect his thinking about joining, we used to play together many games back then! I've got one other guy that is in his late thirties that is interested that I did a lot of theatre with over the last decade. His schedule keeps knocking him out, but it's really been a golden era for me the last decade!

D&D would be hard to play if you had no way to communicate to others, but that's pretty much the only barrier to play. I guess you also have to have at least a minimum amount of imagination and baseline attention span, and a good enough memory to follow along with a story. If you can do that, you can play.
I’ve been a DM since the start of it and still play every week. I’d say I’ve learned and improved a lot over the decades and the games now are just as exiting as when I started with the basic set way back when. Yep, us veterans are still spinning dice!
Invented: meaning those who all played a part in starting the game. Cygax didn't just wake up and start the artwork, rules, creating the books and distributing them on his own. Frank Metzner, was vital in developing Basic D&D and he continues to be very active in message boards.
And like I said plenty of guys in the 50s and 60s who grew up in the 70s are still playing. Dungeon Dudes from Youtube are examples.

Yes. And probably not just 5e. I would wager there are several TTRPG platforms where participates are seniors.

I'm 60 and just started DMing again after a 35-year absence. Geez, I hope we can still play!

Have you played D&D before?
D&D is a great game for those of us born before the moon landing.
It is social, mental activity, that can be played online with friends that no longer live in the same city.

I figure in the future you won’t have bingo nights at the retirement homes but D&D night. Who plays bingo anymore?
