It was just something I thought of while an Owl familiar was dive-bombing a group of goblins using its Dragon's Breath Poison. Since it never outright said apply the poison condition I thought that was the case but when I see the Damage/Effect: Poison in the spells stat block I started to question myself.
Ongoing effects are always explicitly stated and given a duration. Just like Acid Spray doesn't keep on eating away at you and Fireball doesn't set you on fire and do additional damage each turn, poison damage doesn't automatically give the Poisoned condition.

Lol, great horned owls are one of the few predators that hunt skunks (they don't care about the smell) so I picture your owl divebombing the enemies with a skunk in its talons crop dusting them with skunk spray (as a cinematic description of the poison dragon breath)

Oh, now that is a great visual. That could have been the material component for the spell!
I could see an ancient green applying the condition. That's a great idea! All of my dragons will apply some sort of thingie with their breath. Only the big ones though.

Do spells like Poison Spray and Dragon's Breath (using Poison Breath) apply the Poison Condition to the target when damage is taken?
Absolutely not. That would be stupid OP.

Any spell/ability will always state explicitly if it applies the Poisoned condition.

The 5E rules are a lot like wedding vows in The Princess Bride. If they don't say it, they don't do it. :)
