Being a wood- or high elf should give you Elf Weapon Training, which gives proficiency in shortswords, longswords, short bows, and longbows. It lists this in the player's handbook and in D&D beyond when selecting a race, but is then later on not actually applied.
I just noticed the same issue. So with Elf Weapon Training, an elf ranger character will get their proficiency bonus and be allowed to add dexterity to hit and damage with a longsword, even though the web app doesn't seem to understand this?

No. Longsword is not a finesse weapon and therefore cannot have Dexterity be used as their modifying stat. They will get their proficiency bonus but will have to use Strength.
Also having trouble with this. I have elf weapon training and my character isn’t adding the proficiency bonus to my longsword shortsword etc. even though it says I’m proficient in those weapons. Is this just a glitch in the website? Any info would help, thanks.

Post a link to your character so someone can take a look at it for you.
I'm having an issue, here, too, which may be my misunderstanding. I was building an Elf Cleric, and I was trying to equip them with a shortsword. Cleric's can't use showswords, but I thought through the Elf, and Elf Weapons Training, they should be able to use one. The attack modifier is +3, which is from their Dexterity (17), but the +2 proficiency isn't added. To check, I added a shortbow, and that worked as expected: +5 to hit. Is my understanding of the rules off?
If you look at the Elf race page - you'll notice that the Aereni Elves do not get Elf Weapon Training. If you want the weapon training you would need to be a normal High Elf rather than an Aereni High Elf - for example.

If you have Martial and Simple Weapon proficiency from your class, you won't see the individual weapon proficiencies included in those categories.

Still I see it not being applied with a high elf rogue, for shortbow for example as a starter weapon. As far as I can understand, it should give +2 to your HIT / DC while using the weapons affected by this proficiency. Or am I missing something?Sorry, my bad. Realized it was supposed to be +3 without the proficiency bonus being applied.

Also note that when a character is proficient with a weapon, their proficiency bonus is added to the attack roll, but not added to the damage roll.

Can you post a link to the character sheet?

I'm hoping I am doing this right. Please let me know if it doesn't come through.

Thanks - I was assuming they all did. Thanks for pointing out my mistake!
