I'm running a new group in their first ever campaign and suggested they use this app to ease their understanding of the rules. The stat management is wonderful, but a lot of weird stuff isn't congruent with the book . Where are all the backgrounds? Things like this make it difficult to run from the app since my players are using their books to start their characters and then use the app as a home for their sheet while we play.
Example:. My bard can't pick the entertainer class? Is this player error or the app being incomplete?
That is crazy. I just bought a physical copies of all the books last month. My players also bought their players guides. I was hoping we could use this app to organize and update. Guess pen and paper wins again. Seems off that there isn't a way to encorporate people who have already spent money on their game.
Basically, this is wehat you are paying for on DnDBeyond:
This purchase unlocks the entire contents of the book version for use with D&D Beyond, including the book in digital format in the game compendium and access to all the content’s options in the searchable listings, character builder, and digital sheet.
Not paying for access to content.. paying for convenience of using that content with the tools online.

Oh well. Thanks for the heads up.
Because D&D Beyond offers (and will offer) much more than what your books provide. Yes, you get the book's content in a digital format, but the tool services they offer and still coming are incredibly useful. You can also piecemeal the parts of the book you need for character building. The character builder content from every source without the digital book content is only about $70 total. And then a Master Tier subscription would allow you to share that content with others in your campaign.

I've subscribed thinking that released at least the base level stuff in the players handbook. It doesn't. What utter crap.
You didn't read what you were purchasing then. D&D Beyond isn't maliciously hiding information to get you to make purchases. There's no place on the internet to convert physical to digital, NO WHERE. If you want to play online or have digital tools then you need to invest in them.

Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
Given that this is one of the more complained of elements that I have read about online, I would suggest that in fact this is poorly explained by the provider.
I think that they need to be much more explicit about the exclusions at point of sale.
This subscription includes limited access to the players handbook source material. You will need to make a one off purchase of the players handbook to access all subraces, class backgrounds etc.
This subscription includes limited access to the players handbook source material.
Just want to clarify on this point; there isn't any content that access to which is granted by having a subscription, limited or otherwise.
The Basic Rules are accessible to everyone, as they are made freely available by Wizards of the Coast. You do not need a subscription to access this content.

Your wording isn't accurate, though. The subscription doesn't include access to ANY content: material from the Basic Rules, the System Reference Document, and the Elemental Evil Players Companion is free whether or not one has a subscription. A subscription doesn't make any changes at all to the content one has access to (aside, I suppose, from the ability to add other people's published homebrew to your collection for use).

Can you explain where the confusion is? You are provided exactly what is described and nothing more. If they had to explicitly list everything you DON'T get, then the list would be very long.

At a guess, I'd say 'create unlimited characters' might be tripping some people up. Wording like 'create an unlimited number of characters' might help if that's the case.
Though adding a note flat-out that states 'Subscriptions do not unlock any content that has been published in a D&D Sourcebook or Adventure, unless it was also provided for free as part of SRD/Basic rules' or however you want to state it.

The stuff I crossed out is automatically included for free even without a subscription.
Other than that I agree wholeheartedly with you. Both of those suggested changes would increase transparency.
Yeah, I know it's included for free. But I can see people saying 'but it let me pick Gust, and that's from XGtE!' (for people who don't even know about EEPC) or similar, so I figured spelling out the one exception couldn't hurt, if we're trying to make this as foolproof as possible.

Well, that could be addressed if DDB actually listed the EEPC as one of the sourcebooks like they do the Basic Rules & SRD.
Wow, I actually deal in contract law so I am not entirely stupid.
What i am getting at is that I understood from the subscription package that it would unlock the players handbook options for character building. In other words, i assumed incorrectly as it turns out, that a subscription would allow me to create a cleric with a domain other than "life" for example.
I understand that an exclusion list would be very long indeed, but that's not my point. I am suggesting that a caveat that purchasing a subscription does not entitle you to access to all options unless those options are purchased.

And how did you come to believe you would get access to the PHB? where on the list of things granted by the subscription did you come to interpret your thoughts?
I didn't expect access to the PHB. I expected that I would be able to build a character with all options available in the PHB. I don't think that is an unreasonable expectation and looking at other concerns raised by people online, I'm not the only one.
I own copies of the PHB, DMG and MM in both 5e and 3.5e. I assumed incorrectly, that this was a handy add on tool for managing digitally character management and really not much more. I understand that it actually includes campaigns and other materials.
I withdraw the statement that it is utter crap, but I still maintain that for a person who has minimal exposure to the tool, the subscription information and information about unlocking other data is in fact quite scant.

One final thing, appreciate the kind response mate. I didn't actually realise that there was a difference and really appreciate the courteous clarification.

Hi,
without a purchase, only the free content is usable. Check the Marketplace for the several options of purchases.
