I cannot in good conscience take the poll. Best what?
Half-orc barbarian can pull the most damage out of a battleaxe swing but they're terrible @ cocktail parties. Warforged draconic sorcerers have the highest naked AC of spellcasters, but they can't tell a joke.
For a total chaos character throw a goblin caster into the party- you get a +50% probability of killing your entire party. For fun, how about a kobold conquest paladin? Or an owlbear totem bugbear? Half-drow ninja? Too passe. Halfling beastmaster that rides his companion? Now yer talkin' fun. [My most recent character: human hillbilly hoochmeister artficer.]
Any under dark character with an Australian accent-because they come from the land down under.
Best combo is the last character I created, until I make the next one. Anything can be fun with the right concept behind it and 5e is very forgiving with non-ideal combos.
In my opinion I think the drow ranger(gloom stalker) is the best if your playing any dark/underdark adventure (rime of the frost maiden or out of the abbys) I’m playing a drow ranger gloom stalker. If you are playing rime of the frost maiden ranger make your tarian artic.
There is no “best combo.” The “best” combo is the one you want to play. I’m personally a big fan of so called mismatches (orc wizard, etc.), but not everyone is.

I love it when someone rolls up to my table with a PC that is bucking trends. More elf/fairy/gnome/halfling barbarians please!
Mechanically i don't think any single class and a race are the strongest (mainly because multiclassing just outperforms in most cases) but my vote is probably Aarakocra wizard. Being able to fly with light armor or no armor it makes the class very effective for casters (and ranged weapon classes) cause it just keeps you out of certain monsters ranges. and of the solo classes i think wizard is the strongest if ac and hp can be mostly bypassed .
as for my personal favorite it's orc/Gnoll(Homebrew) Barbarian. simple and effective. big idiot

I just got done playing an orc Wizard in a recent one shot. It's such a fun idea and concept.

What about for beginners?
Bugbear rogues are too good
