Player Syncing: Continuing the above, it would be awesome if we could sync. For example if all my players use this to make their characters, they can sync with me so I can see their character stats. It would be AMAZING if it could sync in real time too. So like they take damage, they record that on theirs, and I also see it on mine. How awesome would that be! (not sure that is something that can be done without wifi, but I'd be okay if like...some features aren't available unless you're on wifi, but do exist for those that are connected). On a bit of a negative note, I've got a player who cheats, so I'd especially be interested in this so I can see when he uses spell slots, what his HP is, etc. It'd also be cool if I as DM can award them XP points on mine and it shows up on theirs. And if they level there is a satisfying pop up "congratulations you leveled!"
This would be very awesome! Another, similar thing I'd like to see if that if I, as a DM, enter my homebrew content into the system, I'd like for my players to have access to that in short order as well!
If you're able to provide a tool that makes professional looking maps with a reasonable learning curve, AND have the ability to make links on that map to what the DM makes in the campaign manager... oh, and with the ability to export to a Fantasy Grounds friendly format (for those who use VTTs)... that would be worth the price of admission to many, I believe.
Thrilled to see the progress so far, makes sense given what is available without licensing, love how much easier this makes it to access the Basic Rules. I appreciate the transparency and honesty.

When you’re creating your own shit, man, even the sky ain’t the limit. ~ Miles Davis
I just have to say that I am loving the way they are handling this beta. The survey is asking for input on the exact features that people here on the forums have been clamoring for since this was announced. It is clear they are paying attention and taking people's feedback very seriously. I am so excited for this I can hardly contain myself!
I am very much hoping for the following:
Offline availability. This is HUGE. I play somewhere with literally NO internet, and we play for sometimes 10 hours at a time, so using up my phone data is not something I am keen on. If there isn't offline availability it's a complete deal breaker for me sadly, because I won't be able to use it. :'(
Encounter Management: I really would love to be able to track more than just initiative. Being able to track my monster and my players HP, AC, Initiative, conditions, temporary spell effects, etc would be awesome. I'd love some kind of round tracker too, so like if a temporary spell is in effect there is a button I press that tracks whose turn it is "next turn" or something, and when it gets back around to the start of the initiative or the caster's next turn it automatically keeps track of how many turns left of a spell effect or condition. That would be SWEET. And being able to track if one of my monsters or players is charmed, feared, etc, also awesome. Death saves too would be cool.
And if they level there is a satisfying pop up "congratulations you leveled!"
Character Management: I know this is already a thing, but I had a few thoughts on it. But step-by-step creation and level up process would be neat. Like you click the level up button and you get prompted to increase your HP, pick your new spells, and chose new features ETC. OH if this app could track Spell Components, and automatically remove those consumed when a spell is cast...and even tell the player "you don't have components for that" when they try to cast a spell...I would LOVE that. It's little details like that which are often ignored in games. Also tracking things like lay on hands, or resetting stuff after long/short/full rest, etc. Status effects, etc.
Note Taking: A good note taking system. It is one of the things I dislike about my current go-to app because there just isn't a really good way to take lots and lots of notes. I am a player (and a DM) who loves taking notes during every session. The names of NPCs I run into, the names of towns or cities, things like that. And as a DM I like to make note of choices characters have made, things they've said, and ideas for things. Right now I keep my notes in a word document on my iPad.
Map Creation: I don't know if this is getting too much or too advanced, but being able to make dungeons/towns would be awesome. I'd love not just a visual map, but also like a legend where I can put a number on a building or room and have that open up a tool-tip or sidebar that lists the things in there, the description, the NPCs, traps, treasure, etc. Even if it's just a basic textbox where I write all that down it'd be cool. It would also be neat if it were possible to send it to a projector or screen on the table (just the map). I imagine that is how either Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds works, I've never used either.
I am connected to my iPad, it is an extension of my being. If I had all the above features, I could literally just bring my iPad and a bag of dice to D&D whether I am playing or DMing and be set. I am so very excited for this thing. My current go-to app for character management is okay, but limited. And despite the fact that I purchase all the physical books, I still feel a bit of guilt using a third party (and unsupported) app.
Player syncing would be great! That's a lot of good ideas! And for your player who cheats, cheat back. DMs can't cheat. I always tell someone if I catch or suspect them of cheating I will make their game life a living hell. I will skip them in initiative order, take extra hits on them or even curse them. I had a cheater in my game until recently and he got with it real quick. He was upset the first time he got skipped in the initiative but I am the DM and I ref this game, you make a penalty and I'll put you in the penalty box.

Serandis Mendaen (Aereni Elven Rogue/maybe one day Wizard)- Project Point Playtest
We have updated Phase 1 of the DDB beta with the new Characters section (Races, Classes, Backgrounds, and Feats), as well as incorporating the remainder of the Basic Rules into the Compendium section.
You will now see the entirety of both the Basic Rules and the Systems Reference Document (SRD) together in one place!
I think I am missing something. I don't see many of the monsters from the Basic Rules. http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop/dm-basic-rules contains Allosaurus and Ankylosaurus and Pteranodon just to name a few which i cannot see in the monster list here on DnDBeyond. Also all the monsters say they come from the Basic Rules but many of them are not in the Basic Rules, they are in the SRD. in fact all monsters level 9+ (minus Fire Giant, Stone Golem and Adult red dragon) are NOT in the basic rules. i wish that the monsters would list all the sources they come from... accurately. In fact i see that in the advanced filter for the monsters the only option is BR but like i said this whole monster set is SRD not BR it seems. this would be helpful because later on as you get into encounter building and campaign running it would be really useful for me as a DM who is maybe considering taking some of these encounters out and putting them into an adventure to sell it would be important for me to know that i am only putting in SRD monsters or monsters whose stats are freely accessible (BR) so i can accurately navigate some of those licensing challenges.
Wait a second. while checking some of these same pitfalls for Feats and Backgrounds i saw this:
The backgrounds below are part of the Basic Rules (SRD).
First: please be consistent with your abbreviations are you abbreviating Basic Rules as BR as you do in the Monster filters or as SRD which you do here in this statement
Secondly and more importantly: Do you know that the Basic Rules are not the SRD. and neither is a subset of the other? its like a venn diagram. there are lots of similarities but each has its own uniqueness. like the SRD specific monsters i mentioned above (Adult copper dragon) are not in the BR and some BR monsters (like Allosaurus) are not in the SRD. In fact on the Backgrounds page i pulled the quote from you mention backgrounds that are in BR but you used the SRD abbreviation.
I hope you differentiate between SRD and BR. i hope you finish getting the BR content in there and i hope you use your abbreviations consistently

Hi 8bagels,
you're right - it's not that clear, but let me see if I can explain.
Prior to D&D Beyond, WotC have made two separate sets of rules freely available (as you identified):
1. The Basic Rules (BR). 2. The Systems Reference Document (SRD).
As you also noticed, neither one of these two is a subset of the other, so what you're seeing with D&D Beyond is, for the first time, an official amalgamation of all of the free content from both BR & SRD, which moving forward will be the new standard. This is because the dev team are working with the WotC team to make this happen.
In that respect - I expect that once D&D Beyond is launched, people will begin to refer to something like the "free rules" and we'll see fewer references to BR/SRD. D&DB still needs to refer to a source publication though, which is BR within the context.
When you see a moderator or staff post on the forums and use the wording "Basic rules (SRD)" this is referring to this free content - an amalgamation between the BR and the SRD.

I recognize that this has not been done before and i applaud you for it. thanks

With all due respect thats not true on much of the content. Adult Copper Dragon's source is not the BR, it is the SRD.
Unless you are saying that BR is mean to MEAN "free rules" and not "Basic Rules" which i would argue is a poor choice of abbreviation. and you would argue its a tradeoff between usability and explicit correctness. i get that
Although they are and will be free they are licensed differently and to SOME people that matters and although its not a requirement it would be cool if this could also be a tool for those people to understand what is SRD and what is BR. technically not persisting that data is data lost but you could say its not important meta data. i can see that side of the argument but also disagree a bit
So where is the best place to report things that are missing from either the SRD or the BR (Basic Rules, not free rules) like my poor Ankylosaurus?
and i do want you to know that i am very appreciative of this work. that didnt come across well initially

There may well be additional passes on the database to tighten that up - I don't know. I'll check with staff next time we chat, what the intentions are, and pass that information on.

OMG! Player Syncing would be genius!
Extending that concept a little further is to once the Players are Synced is to determine the partying rating, which will help DMs will be prepared for the power level of the group and which would help with determining any encounter scaling.
I love the idea of Player Syncing - You are a certified genius Synieth!
And sorry you had to deal with a player cheating, that isn't cool. I'm the jerk at the table that calls other players out for "forgetting" things like marking used spells at the table. Yea, I'm that guy.

I'm not set on Map Creation. Otherwise, this list of features isn't a wishlist -- it's a baseline expectation. If DnD Beyond does not have these, I won't be a customer. Period. Why? I've already got tools for these. I actually have all the tools I need to run a game, and then some. The only thing missing is to have them all in one place.
Also, I'd replace your "Notes" point with "Campaign Wiki" (with DM-only sections). I'd also add Combat Tracker to the list.
If one owns the books, would that unlock the full content at release without having to pay extra?
This program would make literally no money if that were so. Anyone using this program probably already owns at least the PHB. That's ridiculous.
When you buy the PHB, you don't then get PHBs for free, forever. You have to buy separate iterations of the rules each time, even if it's the exact same. It's the same with this program. I already own a PHB. When I buy another PHB, I have to pay. If I want this program, I have to pay. That's just how it works.

There seems to be this weird confusion that Wizards of the Coast are making D&D Beyond and therefore the assumption is that if WotC are doing it, then they're charging twice for the same product, and should give it for free to the loyal and wonderful and kind and squishy-huggable customers.
Which is also ridiculous seeing as even if it was WotC doing it, it'd still cost them money that would need to be recouped.
Honestly, some of the requests in this thread are so whack-a-doodle as to be beyond even rolling-eyes worthy. They've gone out the other end into mouth-agape. Expecting content for free is just another passenger on that wild ride.

Except that much of the functional aspect of this product is already available for free elsewhere.
While it would be cool to get that content for free, I also don't see how it would be possible. Maybe beta members could get a discount or something. I'd definately pick up at least the 3 core books.
