"I am a timeless chorus. Join your voice with mine, and sing victory everlasting."
- The Gloomweaver, Date Unknown
In the wake of a conflict which nearly shattered the world, the mortal races of Aertha united to prevent such a war from ever happening again. The young world saw a resurgence of magic and the peoples of Aertha -- once bound to the soil of their ancestral lands -- turned their eyes towards the stars.
Now in an era where the arcane has bridged the vastness between different realms, hundreds of worlds have united under the banner of the Aegis Compact. The Compact is an alliance born out of necessity and shared vision, that has fostered a fledgling interstellar civilization on the cusp of its golden age. Yet still, even in eras of prosperity, there is conflict and struggle. On the frontier of Compact, the outer colonies harbor seeds of dissent. Distant settlements chafe under governance from afar, and some have begun to whisper of rebellion.
A series of recent unexplained Spelljammer disappearances near Fallowfield -- a harvest world in the blurry border between the "outer" and "inner" colonies -- has caught the attention of the Compact's military leadership. Certain that sending a fleet would enflame tensions, they've instead elected to send a small group of loyalists to investigate the matter and if possible, stop those responsible.
I am recruiting 4 to 5 players for a Spelljammer campaign that runs from 5th to 9th level. I would like for the campaign to expand past that, but this is play-by-post which is notoriously slow moving, so I'm starting small. If we end up with a good group of players that can remain active, we'll definitely push into the higher levels of play.
I'm looking for player characters that are good or neutral aligned, but most importantly loyal to the Aegis Compact.
Applications Apply below with a character concept you'd like to bring into this campaign. It can be as detailed or barebones as you wish. My one request is that you try to engage with the concept I'm going for here. For example: be a space soldier, a spy operative, a ship navigator, or a frontier scout for the Compact.
For ability scores, you have options:
Ability scores: 1113914914
Ability scores: 171515131111
Point-Buy
For races, I have no restrictions. But I have a personal preference towards human/demi-human types. Tasha's sourcebook stuff is acceptable. From here, I leave the thread open to you all. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.
Rogue 1/Monk 4 (will be shooting for Swashbuckler/Drunken Master)
Essentially he is a scout for the Compact but has not advanced as rapidly as he should have as he does not necessarily follow the "rules" per se and goes and does things his own way. Think Jack from SGC 1.
I would like to apply with Haze, a circle of stars druid. She is a navigator hailing from one of the inner worlds of the Aegis Compact. Being from a "sheltered" existence with not much practical experience, I imagine her being quite naive, if well intentioned. Having been brought up with the assumption that every world would would eventually join the compact, meeting opposite viewpoints will hopefully result in some interesting roleplay. Mocked up sheet here: www.dndbeyond.com/characters/120425531/4vuvGK
If air genasi aren't a common species in the core worlds of the Aegis, I'll also gladly switch, probably to astral elf.
I'd like to put forward Revana. I'm imaging her as someone that bought in the ideals of the Aegis Compact at a very early age, beginning her civic or military involvement as soon as she possibly could. If possible, I'd like to make her a Blood Hunter - Order of the Mutant. I imagine her mutagens as experimental concoctions to enhance the Compact's soldiers. If you're interested I'd love to work out details to fit her to your setting!
The character I would like to use is a female elf gunslinger (fighter subclass) that serves as a soldier for the Aegis Compact. She's relatively young for an elf but she's very capable and lawful/good in nature. We can flesh out her backstory in private if that's alright. I kinda just threw this concept together and hope it's gonna fit.
Cook morale and liaison officer Orion Ursa. Orion grew up on a nautical ship with his parents both of them lifelong ships crew. Orion’s birth was special, his mother who spent long hours in the crows nest as a lookout once, during a sudden storm was hit by lightning and knocked from the mast somehow surviving the fall to the deck. Moments later Orion was born, blessed by the sky his mother often said.
Turns out sometimes it’s who you know, more then what, in Orion’s case his dad’s brother put in a good word for Orion. Best shrimp gumbo, and swordfish kebabs, he would tell any who would listen. Although Orion is also a student of history and a healer as well.
I’m the best fisherman and cook you’ll ever find, plus I’m guided by Ra the sun and stars reach to me. I am compelled to sail the sky.
The character I'd like to present is L'amote Jaine (any pronouns), a level 4 Inquisitive Rogue, level 1 Ranger. They are endlessly devoted to the Compact, having seen firsthand a what comes of a land left unchecked, without the hand of authority to guide it. They work tirelessly to enforce order and quell unrest within the Compact, and their investigative abilities made them an obvious choice by the higher-ups for this mission. Additionally, they've many years of experience dwelling among and navigating the airless expanses between planets, allowing them to additionally serve as a skilled pilot or navigator.
Appearance: (The mask is mostly just an intimidation tactic for when they're on the job, since they're pretty baby-faced beneath.)
Placeholder I’ve always wanted to do a Spelljammer campaign.

‘ too much of a bio to fit here. call me Bananer for short, I’m one of the forum’s resident insane things. I’m a nongender Therian (look it up!) and also a silver dragon (not my kintype, just a me thing.) I’m a rogue and wizard, and if you want more info on me, PM me, or ask someone else. I’m well known.
I kind of feel criminal for not trying out a monk or some other crazy-MAD build. (Honestly, the 4-elements monk has some intrigue to it, if only it didn't cost so much Ki.)
Seeing that proposed ideas have been druid, cleric, fighter, rogue, monk, I'm kind of thinking of a sorcerer or wizard. Get a little magic in there.
Current ideas are
Chipper the Hadozee Wizard (probably School of Illusion; I've had a hankering for trying out illusion stuff). Feels right to use a Spelljammer race in a Spelljammer setting, but is that race close enough to your desired demi-human vibe? (Not sure if monkey-man deviates too much for your preferences.) Basic idea being he came from the common folk (Folk Hero) and sees the benefits of peace and prosperity that have come from the Compact. Sure, he may sometimes reminisce about the days there was more independence, but there was also more strige. More war. More famine and hardship. So he's got a duty to help keep that going.
Phait the Hill Dwarf Wild Magic Sorcerer. Will need to look through backgrounds to see which vibe goes best, but thinking of using the long lifespans of dwarves for him to have been one of the people at the dawn of the Aegis Compact (how long has the Compact existed? Just thinking in terms of timelines) and he's patriotic through and through with its glory. He may be getting up in years, but he's still got fight in him. And by golly he'll give it! For Aegis! For honor! Mechanically, Tides of Chaos is an interesting feature. Usually I shy away from levelled spells with attack rolls. (Spell slots are limited, so I tend to prefer things that should have at least a guaranteed effect with saves.) But with Tides of Chaos advantage, if it's allowed to recharged each time it could, makes an interesting case for trying out more of those. So would be asking what your preferred takes on Tides of Chaos recharge is.
Preston the Half-Elf College of Valor Bard. (note to self: take medium armor master at lv4 to boost a 15 DEX to 16 along with allowing +3 AC from DEX in med-armor.) On the younger side, growing up during the Golden Age of the empire. An adventurous lad, seeking glory in battle. Pride in the Compact military and a soldier himself. Edit: (self-note: Actually use the 17 in DEX; makes your weapon attacks better)
I'll make a more detailed things at a later point (more formal, more fleshed out backstory hopefully) but those are my first thoughts. Looks interesting.
Sounds like it could be a fun chance to work in a concept I’ve been toying with for a while.
March Sibernica, clockwork sorcerer 3/order cleric 2 - raised in a large family aboard a family-owned commercial Spelljammer vessel (shipping, fishing, etc.) - he separated from the family as a young man due an urge to fight the chaos. His pursuit of order led him to the Compact, where he has served now into his late 30s.
As a backstory quirk:
Due to an encounter his family’s vessel had with a group of Modrons, he is afflicted with a curse. He finds himself drawn to and inspired by Primus, his deity, and is slowly being transformed into a sentient clockwork being. Mechanically, I think this could play as either a form of lycanthropy, or (as I had imagined it) as a swapping out of a feat and ability scores in the event that the curse is finalized.
I think in this context, he would be well suited to be a spymaster or inquisitor of sorts. Pursuing truth, dedicated to the Compact. But open to changes as necessary of course.
Darrush, Half-Orc Space Marine. Born on a backwater colony world, Darrush joined the Aegis military to see outside his home. He has grown very loyal and merged his tribal sense of honor with a military one.

Quick question, do we still do starting equipment or gold for this one, and milestone or XP based leveling?
Starting equipment. We'll discuss additional gold/equipment once the party is chosen. Milestone based leveling, it's just smoother with story-beats. Instead of having to figure out "well how much XP do I give the party for solving XYZ without killing stuff."
but is that race close enough to your desired demi-human vibe? (Not sure if monkey-man deviates too much for your preferences.)

But with Tides of Chaos advantage, if it's allowed to recharged each time it could, makes an interesting case for trying out more of those. So would be asking what your preferred takes on Tides of Chaos recharge is.
Monkey-man is close enough.
The Compact is over 500 years old at this point. As for Tides of Chaos.
RE: Tides of Chaos - In the past I've handled it as an escalating chance with each spell cast. Essentially I roll a dice based on the level of the spell cast. If it's under that, you get a surge. If it's over that, no surge but the number is higher next time I roll.
Meet Solari, a human who has been travelling for some time. During one of his space adventures, he surveyed a strange cave, full of crystal blue eggs. Upon closer inspection, they all hatched, and hundreds of small insects appeared and flew around him. Solari remained calm and attempted to communicate with them with success. Since then, the Swarm, as he calls it, has adopted him as their parent. The swarm can switch from the ethereal to the material plane at will, protecting Solari as if they were family. Solari's job is that of a navigator, working hard to become the best navigator of the quadrant. His dream is too make enough money to buy his own Spelljammer vessel.
It looks like you're already filled up, or that you've got lots of options for players. But if there's space, I'd like to offer up a possible character:
Marius, the Tortle Artificer. He's an arcane mechanic, who has always loved to tinker with devices and spells; and is fascinated by the interplay of magic and the astral plane. He has minor disdain for wizards, who "just copy things out of a book, and don't even understandhow their own magic works."
The Aegis Compact made first contact with his world when he was still young, and though his people had not yet discovered spelljamming and planar travel, they already had a strong tradition of combining arcane and physical craftsmanship. Marius joined up on that first ship, dreaming of catapulting his people into the future. He worked his way up, and at this point there are few people better if you need to improvise a solution to you problem while adrift in the astral.
As the least human - not even mamalian - member of almost every crew he's worked with (though he has occasionally seen the truly alien Thri'keen), he often plays the role of social outsider trying to understand your cultures.
What I would be most interested in playing is an autognome from the Spelljammer source book, loyal to the Compact because it was built that way. Custom made to fit any gaps in what was needed.
But it looks like you already have more than enough applicants, and constructs aren't really humanoid, they just look that way...
Sorry to ask one more question, but what's your stance on using DDB homebrew to copy official material? For example, making a replica of Mind Sliver if we don't own Tasha's.
