In answer to your question, I have no problem with you having a hand crossbow instead of a short bow in your initial equipment. I am not really clear why the hand crossbow costs 3 times the amount of the shortbow honestly.
I mean...they're much more complicated machines that you can't just cut a tree branch and string up. :)
I really only want it for flavor. It'll be quite a long time until I would even have the option to exploit it with Crossbow Expert and by then Yam would probably be able to buy one anyway. I just want the visual of a giant penguin shooting a crossbow! I'd prefer to have a two-handed one but figured keeping the same damage die would be a more practical swap for starting out.
Applebough is a young member of his grove, studying under the elder historian. The young sapling has been chosen as the new historian, as the elder has been in declining health. Professor Lorrimor had been walking through the grove when he was set upon by one of the wolf packs that wander their lands. Applebough was able to save the professor from an uncertain fate as he intervened in the encounter. Though the members of the grove would traditionally not interfere in such an event, the young, rash member saw little choice, and was rewarded by being banished from the grove. Now a lone, wandering sapling, Applebough continues to recite the tales and poems he learned from the elder to those who would listen.
Throwing my hat in for consideration. I have a concept, just need to roll stats and knock it out later today after I give the material a second look. Hopefully I get the dice roller to cooperate.

Edit: In the sake of transparency I am considering https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/3852-abomination which is one of the higher rated homebrew races and the first when I found when I searched for homebrew race with an INT bonus. There's a selection of traits that they have to choose. I think overall it falls a little short of YTP and VHuman but its on the higher end of things. Just realized most of the 'troublesome' stuff only works when they are shifted, which has major RP cost to it.And for class I was hoping for Blood Hunter 2020. Its not official material, probably won't ever be officially published in a book, but has enough publicity for you to know what you're getting, and it seems like it might fit the tone of Carrion Crown. Of course, there's countless other homebrew out there, but its a little tricky to get it to work on DBDBY. I'd be willing to use a google drive sheet if that was acceptable too. . . .
Update: The bones are in, the nervous system has been wired. Muscles and skin stretched on too. I'll be working on painting the nails and brushing the teeth a little bit but they should be 'done enough.' I have two characters for your approval because I don't often get to play with Homebrew and I like to give the DM options. I'm equally fond of both, I think. Note that there are spoiler blocks after each character. They don't always show on Chrome for me.
Option One: Dragutin Morigak, a tortured soul who was soothed and studied by The Professor. Race: Abomination. Class: Blood Hunter. Background: Subject of Study. Theme Song: Guess. More details tonight, but here's the first draft of his story:
Born a twin among a family of 9 siblings, Dragutin was a solitary youth, resentful of a family that used him as little more than a hired hand. He spent much of his time exploring the limestone caves near his family's spinach farm on the cliffs overlooking Avalon Bay.
When he was 13, he went further into the caves than ever before. Determined to track down her home-grown farmhand, his mother disappeared during the 'rescue.' Dragutin does not speak easily of what happened in those caves, but he emerged. . . wrong. Something beyond the scope of a peasant's reckoning had warped him to some unknown purpose.
The pain of his wounds has faded, but among the bizarre physical alterations, he has been left with a lingering, potent rage and bloodlust that can flare up to catastrophic results.
During one such rampage in a nameless hamlet, a passing academic saw a problem to be solved. The Professor, while not familiar with Dragutin's particular case, was a brilliant man, and was able to soothe the abomination's rage. The professsor studied Dragutin, learning what he could, and identifying the trademarks of whatever Aberration did this to the wandering youth.
The Professor did more for Dragutin in one week than his own family did his entire life. Dragutin wouldn't forget that.
It has been years since that horrific week. In the time since, Dragutin has been carving out a miserable survival. He earns some coin here and there as a bodyguard or rat catcher - the latter job even fills his stomach. Whenever he feels the blood-urge rising, he leaves town and hunts down easy prey - a stray goblin, an arrogant highwayman, or even unattended livestock.
Life's not easy for a tiefling. Life's even harder for a tiefling in Ustalav. Life's particularly hard for a cambion trying to pass as a tiefling in Ustalav.
Safviel (Saf to her friends, Sapphire to her clients) was born to a human witch and an incubus sire. Though she never met her father, her mother, in her own dark way, cared for Safviel and gave her a fair chance at life. Saf lived with her mother for most of her life, until an Inquisitor came knocking. Her mother stood defiant while Saf escaped and saved her own life.
She was old enough to get by on her own, though, and joined a traveling troupe trying to bring cheer to the dour people of Ustaval. It was a perfect cover for her - they could move when superstitions turned against her. Her exotic beauty and musical talent brought coin and admirers (and more coin).
In one particularly backwater and inbred village, the troupe was playing the local tavern when a scholarly-looking man came in. Safviel knew instantly there would be trouble. Sure enough, your token brutish drunk picked a fight with the academic, and Saf stepped in.
From that night on, Saf worked for (and worked with) the Professor. He had many needs, and she fulfilled most. Bodyguard, researcher, musician, and companion.
Saf doesn't like many people, but she liked her employer. It was her first vacation in five years when she heard about his death.
((The implication is that Saf was also his sometimes-consort but I don't know if that fits the Professor's character.))
Short bio: When she was young, Varra was captured and twisted by cultists in a dark ritual. The professor helped her to understand her new form and magic in exchange for a future favor.
Idea for Bio: Working in the tunnels under the city, he happened across a creature the likes he'd never seen. Though he and the Professor had been over the memories of that encounter, there has always been time missing. As if a section of his memory has been taken from him.
If successful I will purchase the necessary subscription to allow Homebrew use on the character tool.
1) How many players do you plan to recruit for the game?
2) Do you have a decision/start date in mind or are you keeping it fluid?
I am planning on recruiting 5 - 6 total, and was waiting for at least 6 before closing recruitment.
Now that I have that I am going to close the recruiting tag. Anyone that has already posted is welcome to make adjustments or complete an application. I hope to make the selections tomorrow and have an initial post some time early next week. If I have questions about any of the new submissions they will probably be coming today.

Background and Backstory: The Literal Teacher's Pet:
The result of an experiment on transfiguring inanimate objects into sentient creatures, Pita was sold to Professor Lorrimor for study. Imaging the shock when the dog greeted him in fluent common! Pita became interested in the studies of magic. By first learning to summon a spectral hand (mage hand) to write with, he was able to write down other spells. The professor became less of a master and more of a teacher and friend. While most students specialized in specific fields of magic, Pita learned a bit of everything, showing his progress in the evenings when he came home.
Telantha has left the forests of her home to learn more about the other people of the world. She has always been curious and thus felt the need to learn more about the folk out there. She soon found that there was a thing called money, which she did not have. She quickly learned that there were those who could take money from others, and thought this was as good a way to get some as any other, so started picking pockets as well. She soon had many friends among the criminal faction and her light-hearted attitude was quick to earn her their friendship and loyalty.

Fate smiled on you and Professor Lorrimor one day in the not so distant past. Through a matter of pure chance, you were in a position to save the late scholar’s life and did so. His gratitude was effusive, and he promised that he would never forget you. You are unsure of the nature of the summons in his will, but believe he may have listed you as a possible heir in thanks for saving him from an untimely demise.
Bowser was raised in a loving home and turned away from his chromatic heritage. He uses his sword to help others - and make some money on the side. Professor Lorrimor was one of the few people Bowser remembered in his travels.
I think your analysis is warranted. I decided to forget playing a Dragon Knight and I found a build for a Rune Knight instead. This was from the Homebrew section.
Making Good on Promises: At some point in the past, Professor Lorrimor did you a favor under the condition that he would someday call on you to repay it. After he came to your aid, however, you never saw nor heard from him again, leaving you with a sense of unending anticipation that each day might be the day you were asked to return the favor. Yet that day never came, and your fears and anxiety about what the professor would call on you to do abated. Assuming the old man had either forgotten about you or died, you eventually assumed you’d never have to follow through on your end of the bargain. When you received word of the professor’s death, and that he had named you specifically in his will, your dread of what he
could possibly want from you has grown throughout your entire journey to Ravengro.
Just wanted to get my application in before hitting the hay, will get you a backstory afterword tomorrow

Option Two: Safviel, a nice woman who worked for the professor for a while. Race: Tiefling I swear. Class: Definitely just a fire sorcerer. Background: On the Payroll ('Entertainer').

My humble apologies for such a short, informal post
I should learn not to post when I'm tired. Let's try again.
Ability Scores: 13 12 13 10 15 12
Race: Civil Kobold (Grunt)
Class: Grave Warden
Background: Subject of Study
Idea for Bio: Working in the tunnels under the city, he happened across a creature the likes he'd never seen. Though he and the Professor had been over the memories of that encounter, there has always been time missing. As if a section of his memory has been taken from him.
If successful I will purchase the necessary subscription to allow Homebrew use on the character tool.

Dreak - Applebough the Young, Treefolk Bard
This sounds very interesting, and I have a concept in mind. Rolling stats and I'll update with details.
Ability Scores: 14 10 15 11 13 14
Name: Applebough the Young
Race/Class: Orchard Treefolk (https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/20518-treefolk) Bard (eventually College of Creation)
Background: Chance Savior

I'm decided to go with Fighter.
I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
6 team members have been selected and messaged through PM. If you were not messaged then your build was not selected for this outing. Thank you for your interest.
