HI! I feel like there is a poor representation of the Over-40 player population! Am I mistaken? There don't seem to be very many streams that I have found with older players. I feel as though I may have "aged-out" of D&D!!! Is this a thing? Anyone else feel the same way? If you have any streams you could link with players in the 40's +, I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT! <3 THANK YOU! <3
YouTube has Matt Colville, Nerdarchy, and Web DM. Pretty sure all of them do or at least have at one point streamed and/or published videos of their home games. I would guess that streamers in general have a youngare demographic because the older players were playing long before streaming was a thing, whereas a lot of younger gamers were brought into the hobby via shows like Critical Role.
To me, I think most of us old-school, 40+ players are more concerned with actually playing than trying to be the next Youtube star. I watch a few episodes here and there, but the idea of watching someone else play a game that I want to play is just, well...odd.
THANK YOU GUYS for your sweet replies! I am looking some of these up right now! I really appreciate your input! I was starting to feel like I should HANG UP MY DICE! <3
One of my playgroups 5/6 or 40+, another 3/4 are 40+, and my third is 4/6 40+. Now we don't stream any of our sessions sadly but there's definitely a lot of us old timers playing :) I would recommend Acquisitions Inc., Force Gray, Critical Role and not sure how old the Adventure Zone guys are but that Dad is for sure 40+.
There used to be a D&D Granny who was over 80 and put short videos of her playing D&D on Youtube. It was a couple of years ago and I can't find those vids again for the life of me, but I thought it was cool.
Also..
T J Storm is 48?!?! Hot damn, he ages well, would've thought he was still in his late 20's.

The poor representation you're noticing has nothing to do with D&D and everything to do with streaming I think. Most older gamers I know would rather play than watch someone else doing it, and streaming/social media has been leveraged hard to spread into the younger market. I love our games but I've never even considered streaming them - if I were 20 years younger I'd probably feel differently.
I think if you go to real life meetups and conventions you will find the representation you're looking for. That's been my experience anyway.
Well, as mentioned before, Critical Role has 3 members who are 40+ (Liam O'Brien, Sam Riegel, Taliesin Jaffe) and next year it will have 5 when Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham join the 40+ club ;-)

I'm 45. I just started DMing last year. Last time in played DND I was not even a teenager. Stars aligned and here I am running a group. Personally I don't need to be on YouTube or anything. I posted my last session on twitch cause we just moved to discord with all this stuff but that's it.
Don't have to be out there on the internet to play. I like to think that others feel the same way. So maybe don't go by what you see in the internet. Just find a group to play with or start one. Doesn't have to be online. The heart of DND was to be in person face to face.
Now that's more difficult with this crap going on so all you need is a voice group online. Millions of people play. They just don't broadcast it.
(Just kidding. I'm 18, but I have a ton of respect for DMs over twice my age. You guys made this hobby survive long enough to make its way to my generation, so thank you)

You are literally young enough to be my son. I’m shocked. Most people I know your age are... barely people yet. They’re still all... gawky. Like baby cows. Not physically mind. Most of the rest think that being offended is “Like, the worst thing eveeer.” And the ones that aren’t are so damned sure that they know everything that they treat the world like a joke. I don’t blame them, I was the same way. But you’re different.

I know. My dad's just 5 years older than you. I'm an experienced DM, but I have not been playing anywhere near as long as most of you guys.

I think the more decisive metric here is that older folks aren't streaming as much, rather than not playing D&D. If we compile a list of why games are being streamed, it makes a bit of sense.

Sly Flourish, How to D&D, 3/7th of Critical Role (and most of the rest are close to 40)
I also run a game for my parents although we don’t stream. You’re never too old for D&D!
edit: Acquisitions Incorperated! At least some of them. Shame on me for forgetting them.
Just a few examples:
T. J. Storm is 48
Chris Perkins is 52
Matthew Lillard is 50

Not at all
Infact I remember playing on this website with some guy who was like 60
Marvarax and Sora (Dragonborn) The retired fighter and WIP scholar - Glory
Brythel(Dwarf), The dwarf with a gun - survival at sea
Jaylin(Human), Paladin of Lathander's Ancient ways - The Seven Saints (Azura Claw)
Urselles(Goblin), Cleric of Eldath- The Wizard's challenge
Viclas Tyrin(Half Elf), Student of the Elven arts- Indrafatmoko's Defiance in Phlan
Build in '65, so no worries mate!
playing since 1986
My group doesn’t stream, but half of us are well over 40. And we also have someone in college. Age doesn’t matter for D&D!
Professional computer geek
I don't see how there's any way to know what the average age of D&D players is. You'd need to do an extensive survey to find that out.
WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

Almost everyone in the group I DM is at least 36, some over 40, only one player is young, one of the other player’s sons.
