I use it extremely sporadically, and it's a crapshoot as to whether I'm using it as an upvote or a 'thanks,' which is how it's actually considered in the stats.
I upvote/thank a lot of posts, especially those that help other users with whatever issues they might be having. I think it’s nice to thank someone for helping out, even if it isn’t me that needed the help. And of course, like many others I also use it to convey agreement. I kinda wish that DDB had separate “Like” and “Thank” buttons.
I think a large part of the system’s problem is that it does not appear in portrait mode on the phone. I know I will use it when I am at a computer, but to use it when on mobile? It would have to be a pretty good post for me to enable auto rotate so I can turn the phone to landscape mode so I can upvote a post.

I keep my phone set to automatically rotate when in landscape all the times, I almost never lock rotation on my phone. It’s super easy for me to just use it in landscape when I’m on DDB. 🤷♂️

I used to but then the upvote function has been linked to the Portraits not loading issue. I have stopped upvoting forum posts since this was theorized back then and have been passively looking for comments I have upvoted and removed that upvote.
Aside from the problems with mobile (related: could they not have a method where they let you skip to the unread part? Or at least colour code them?), I normally do it to show appreciation, normally because I don't want to derail the thread or distract from the thrust of the conversation by explicitly replying to it to it just to say thank you.
I'm too inconsistent to use it as an upvote.

I feel like the same can go for signatures, and most people on this website use portrait mode on a phone.

Hollow unbreakable arrows are the most OP common magic item, and my current method of coming up with insane combat shenanigans.
if you make a steel pipe with one end closed and a nozzle on the other, you can enlarge it, fill with any liquid, and then drop concentration, creating a high pressure squirt gun. (or a pipe bomb, depending if it holds)

This was fascinating from a technical perspective, and explains a lot. I think I'm beyond the point of no return but it's nice to know I can kill the cookie if I really need to.
It's difficult to use on mobile, which is where I do most of my forum reading/posting. But whenever I'm on desktop, or sometimes if a post is so good that it's worth the hassle, I try to still upvote.
The arrow's hover text says "click to like this" so I click it when I like something. It doesn't technically "upvote" (elevate the comment over other comments in the discussion), so I think it's just a mark of appreciation. I get the sense sometimes, when a feedback type comment gets a substantial response, it's likely to lead to staff or mod articulating staff response, even if it's a reiteration of name your standing D&D Beyond outcries.
There was a thread some time back where someone was trying to quantify "user post quality" by post to likes ratios, but that gets skewed if you have a user who plays in a play by post or the forum games in the kitchen.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
People definitely use the up-arrow thingy, but if someone is looking to receive up-arrow points for posting, that person is possibly posting for the wrong reasons and will likely receive fewer up-arrow points than just being part of the community.

No?” will be my epitaph.
Yeah, I can't think of any posts I've paid attention to that were trying to "game" the "like system." I don't know why other than naive attention seeking validation since I don't think there's much support for this forum connecting people to their social medias where metrics arguably "matter" more.
CORRECTION: I think there were in the past some cliques that used to solidarity vote each other but that's died down to be as far as I know non existent over the past few years.

I DID use the upvote system, then I found out that it was responsible for causing images to disappear from the character sheet - and other character sheet weirdness - so I've stopped using it, even though some posts definitely deserve an uptick.
P.S. The hover text says "Click to like this" - which is misleading when in the account it is referred to as "Thanks".

100% agree. There's so many comments I want to upvote. I recognize several commenters from this very thread that I've wanted to give multiple upvotes for their great advice. After using Jay_Lane's workaround I have not experienced the things loading problem (most notably dndbeyond hosted images, but I've experienced PDF failing to download, the 'Insert a code block' button in any RTF editor not working, even the entire RTF editor failing to load). I still will not upvote anything because I don't want to tempt the gremlin to return.

🤷♂️ I have never used that workaround and continue to “thank” posts at will and haven’t even had to clear my cookies for months and months. Maybe they fixed it?
Just curious to see how many people actually make use of this system, since upvotes don't really rise a lot in my experience.
I am also here.

I use them as "Liking" a post either because I agree with someone, or because their reply was helpful.
I find it weird that they're supposed to be "Thanks" instead of likes. If I want to thank someone, I reply to them and write "Thank you".
I "thank" posts all the time. Mostly if someone says something helpful or something I agree with.
My problem with the system is I often like something preemptively, and then when I wan't to get rid of the upvote to the post, it won't work.
BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
