A long time ago, there once was a small farming village in the countryside, far from the borders of any existing nation or kingdom. Then one day, a hole in the ground was discovered in the middle of the village, seemingly having appeared in the middle of the night. One brave farmer decided to go down into the hole... and three days later, crawled back out with pockets full of gold, innumerable scars, and madness in their eyes. They rambled about an endless series of caves, that kept going down and down and down for seemingly forever, and how there were unusual monsters and treasures untold.
Word spread quickly of this treasure trove of untold depths, and many aspiring treasure hunters and thrill seekers flocked from all around the world to see the pit for themselves. The little farming village grew into a bustling town from the influx of people and the treasure from what would be known as the Pit of 100 Trials (there's probably more than 100, but the name was kinda catchy, so it stuck). And now, another band of adventurers prepares for their descent in a small inn near the Pit, nervous and at the same time eager for what lies below...
This game is a sort of remix of my previous game, the Tower of Shadows, which in turn was inspired by KingOfCharge's Deep Dungeon. If you too seek to explore the Pit, read the rules below:
Players can join at any time by selecting a Class Kit, where they will be grouped up with the main party. Those who simply wish to spectate may join as a Camera Drone.
RP between characters is encouraged, and the Respite Layers are a great opportunity for some character development.
All characters start the game with 15 max HP, and gain 5 more max HP when leveling up.
Melee characters are often prioritized by melee enemies, and ranged characters are often prioritized by ranged enemies, so if your character is being swarmed, it's nothing personal.
Every layer of the Pit has at least one combat encounter, in which everyone on the player team moves first, enemies second (unless specified otherwise)
Each character gets one action, with which they can attack with a weapon, cast a spell, use an item, etc.
Alternatively, you can perform an action not listed, with which I can try to create an appropriate effect. These actions are risky, but they can pay off very well.
If a character is knocked to 0 HP, they are Unconscious. The unconscious party member cannot take any actions, and dies after 1 round unless they receive healing of any kind. A dead character cannot take any actions until a specific item or spell is used to Resurrect them.
Should the entire party die, one item of each character's equipment will be lost, and they will start back outside the Pit. If the Magic Rope Ladder has been unlocked, the party can use it after dying to access a later layer. *more on this in the Extra Rules*
At the end of combat, all characters regain all their HP, consumable abilities are recharges unless specified otherwise, and dead or unconscious characters are revived to half their Max HP, rounded up.
One character, without any level-ups or magic item enhancements, can only carry 3 weapons, 1 armor, 1 spell, and 5 magic items at a time. Extra equipment can be stored in the Handy Haversack. *more on this in the Extra Rules*
No PvP allowed. The creatures in the Pit are difficult enough without the party fighting themselves.
Be Nice and Respectful to other party members. Leave any baggage you have from other Taverns and threads at the door, and take it with you when you leave.
No vulgar or inappropriate talk or actions. We don't know the ages of the other people here, so keep things PG-13 at absolute most.
If you have any questions, or need something clarified, DM me and we can discuss the details of the problem without breaking the flow of the game.
Extra Rules (For the Magic Rope Ladder and the Handy Haversack):
The Handy Haversack:
All party members share one Handy Haversack between them, which can store 5 additional items.
The Handy Haversack does not apply to a character's carrying capacity, nor do the items inside of it.
Items inside of the Handy Haversack can only be accessed outside of combat, nor can items be placed inside of the Handy Haversack during battle.
The Magic Rope Ladder:
Upon discovering a Respite Layer or completing a Boss Layer, the Magic Rope Ladder will become accessible on that floor.
Should the party find themselves back at the Surface, they can use the Magic Rope Ladder to go down to a floor that the rope ladder has accessed before.
If a Miniboss or Boss normally occupies that layer, it is absent when the party arrives. However, some enemies and bosses of previously cleared layers below the floor the party arrives at may return.
Those are all the rules for the Pit, and most of them are the same or similar to the rules for the Tower of Shadows. Anyway, on to the Class Kits! Most of them are the same, but there is one new addition, and possibly more in the future.
Guard's Kit: A melee-based build meant for tanking damage and dealing damage back. Consists of:
Guard's Spear (weapon, 4 melee damage)
Guard's Chainmail (armor, +5 Max HP)
Guard's Shield (item, reduces melee damage taken by 1, to a maximum of 5 damage absorbed per round.)
Scribe's Kit: A magic-based build designed as a high-damage glass cannon. Consists of:
Scribe's Notebook (item, +1 maximum spells)
Scribe's Robes (armor, +1 spell damage)
Ink Bolt (spell, 4 magic damage)
Magicka Blast (spell, 11 magic damage, once per floor)
Cleric's Kit: A healing-based build designed to keep the party alive. Consists of:
Quartz Dagger (weapon, 3 melee damage, heals anyone on the party for 1 HP)
Cleric's Vestments (armor, +1 to all healing effects)
Rose Quartz Talisman (item, heals any party member for 4 HP)
Musician's Kit: A buff and DPS based build designed to deal consistent damage and empower the party. Consists of:
Bard's Instrument *instrument of your choice* (item, +1 targets for damaging spells)
Flamboyant Attire (armor, +1 maximum spells)
Power Chord (spell, 2 magic damage)
Power Ballad (spell, increases the damage that one party member deals by 3 for this round)
Hexweaver's Kit: A debuff based build designed to weaken the enemy. Consists of:
Hexing Thread (item, +1 turn duration of debuff effects)
Hexing Needle (weapon, 2 melee damage)
Cobweb Robes (armor, +1 maximum spells)
Weaken (spell, reduces an enemy's attack damage by 2 for 1 round. The effect does not stack on the same enemy)
Bleed (spell, the target only heals half as much, rounded down, for 1 turn. The effect does not stack on the same enemy)
Thermomancer's Kit: A damage-over-time build meant to deal continual damage to the enemy. Consists of:
Frostburnt Cloak (armor, all attacks apply either the burning debuff or the frostbite debuff for 2 rounds)
Thermal Flux (spell, extends the duration of the burning debuff or frostbite debuff on 1 creature by 2 rounds)
Once you've selected a Class Kit, you're ready to go down into the Pit. I'll do my best to adjust the difficulty of the Trials as players come and go. That's all for now:
Brace yourselves, heroes, for the journey below...

*I’ll intro a fighter named Dan who uses the Guard kit. If it matters, Dan is an experienced adventurer who now works as a trader, but the lure of the Pit was just too much to resist so he went back to his old adventuring ways for a little while.*
*Dan is a tall human with dark hair and brown eyes.*
On a ledge above the pit of 100 trials, a human with wavy silver hair stands. He's just finished asking around, fluently questioning the many people who now come to this village. He always looks to garner information before setting off on a new quest. He wears casual robes, and has a book under his right arm. Small icy crystals grow upon his skin, yet his palms look like they could bare fire, and flames glint in his eyes. He's smiling. This could be quite the adventure.
*Going for the new Thermomancer's Kit, as its awesome*

I want you to know. You are going to lose. You are going to lose badly. You’re going to lose badly and it’s going to be awesome.

A creature in a pale, tattered, cobweb-covered cloak walks toward the pit. The cloak has barbed wire around the neck, resembling a noose, yet the barbs don't seem to cause pain to the being. Its face looks like a mouthless skull made of rusty metal, with deep pits for eyes and a garland of nails floating around its head. It holds the edges of the cloak with its needle-like claws to its emaciated chest, as if cold.

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
May each word that I speak be backed by each of my teeth.
