Not sure if this is a bug in the character builder or not, but when the total character level reaches 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19, the ability score improvement/feat option doesn't show up if the total character level is split between more then 1 class. Example: I have a level 3 ranger, and I pick up a level in Druid. total level is 4, but no option to increase abilities or choose feats.
This could be a misunderstanding of the rules on my part. Do the ability improvement/feats rules require 4 levels in one class? And if that is the case, a certain level combination can never get all ability increases/feats available to level 20 single classes? Example: a level 11 bard/ 9 rogue would get 2 improvements/feats for the Bard class(8) and 2 for the Rogue(8), total of 4, but a level 12 Bard/8 Rogue would get 3 improvements from Bard and 2 from Rogue, totaling 5? Is this the way it should work, or is this a bug?
Ability Score Increases are a Class feature. This is because some classes give more ASIs than other classes - Rogue gets an extra ASI at level 10, and Fighter gets 2 extras (levels 6 and 14). You won't get an ASI from a class until you've taken at least 4 levels in it. This is a downside to multiclassing.
(Note that if you had a Rogue 12 / Bard 8, you'd have gotten 4 ASIs from Rogue and 2 from Bard, for a total of 6.)
Meanwhile, my absurd character who's taking 1 level in every class has hit level 9 and not received a single ASI, which is by the rules.
