I am going to be playing as a goblin, and i have my heart set on this class, because i have played neither before and am really interested in them- But i was disheartened to find i could not have a familiar unless i was playing as a human.
It isn't the case. While it is true that the only way artificers can learn the Find Familiar spell at level one is by taking a feat with variant human or custom lineage, you can learn the spell at later levels by taking a feat.
But even though you can learn the Find Familiar spell, you don't need to. Artificers have the homunculus servant infusion, which they can take at level 2, and anyone can use that. It's not restricted to humans. Not only that but specific subclasses get other types of pets. The battle smith gets a steel defender, and the artillerist gets eldritch cannons, both at level 3. Though eldritch cannons are more like moving turrets, and don't have to move at all, and can be handheld.
I hope that helps, and good luck in all your inventive endeavors.
You can get Find Familiar as a Spellwrought Tattoo. It's a first level spell, so it would be a consumable common magic item. Keep in mind that because you can't cast it yourself, you can't alter the familiar by casting the spell again, and if it dies you have to get a new tattoo.
Flavor wise it's a tattoo of a familiar that turns into your familiar. You can still use your action to dismiss or call your familiar, so it's not hard to imagine a familiar that becomes a tatttoo again when it's dismissed. So there you have it, tattoo familiar!
The nice thing with the tattoo familiar is that once it is cast, the tattoo disappears and no longer takes up an infusion slot, you can also give your whole party familiar pets over a period of a few days so that’s great too. You could also start a shop where you sell familiars to people, starting off with a maximum number of two customers per day if your on your own, and more with additional artificers and additional levels.
In short…spellwrought familiars are very marketable
