a long while ago, near the start of 5th edition in 2015 we got this blog post and this unearthed arcana article that each helped cover the potential of an dungeons and dragons game set in the modern day with modern equipment, and while this would be an perfect fit for the artificer it was not built to accommodate it, as even the first draft of an 5e artificer would only arrive two years later. So then how would you handle an artificer using these rules? do i give them proficiency in all firearms as per the variant rule, or just proficiency in ether long or sidearms, to make them more in line with more combative fellows? Do i give them all the spells found within the UA article, or should i just limit it to the spells that can broadly be defined as "awakening the magic in mundane items", in other words all the spells to do with hacking, find vechile and protection from ballistics, but not the spells commune with city, invisibility from cameras, and synchronicity? Ought i to convert the technomancy wizard into an artificer subclass, or make an artificer subclass dedicated to hacking? Do i add special infusions to handle the new setting?

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
I would personally figure out what spells out be best. The technomancy wizard I think should stay with wizard and maybe homebrew a subclass for artificer or maybe any of the four subclasses with the different technomancy spells will work, just give them a bonus tool with hacking tools?
Note that it's not "modern", but implements some of the concepts in entertaining ways. I'm also giving access to mind-messing spells like Hideous Laughter and Mind Sliver; I flavored my use of Hideous Laughter as showing memes at the creature. (Worked darn well on that flying harpy, hee hee.)

I've actually been working on a subclass themed around programming and hacking! https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/104778-artificer-subclass-algorithmist-feedback-wanted
