I got a new character with the concept of being a gold dragonborn barbarian. I want him to be the center of attention to the enemy and take the hits. Personal story is involved in the campaign. I'm really proud of my character but his goal is a bit off, bc with my DM approval I added scares on his back the resemble that he used to have wings. I thought making it a zealot barbarian under bahamut and that if he proves himself to his deity that he can be granted his wings again. But I want to get other input on this to see iifa zealot is a good tank or if I should go somewhere else and just later get supported by bahamut for wings.
Lovely idea, plenty to think about. What weapons are you gonna have. Cause the Dragon scales feat helps if you have 1 hand free, and boosts your AC. Why did wings get taken?

His whole concept is to become a superman, a beacon of hope. The weapon I mainly want for him is either a two handed sword or axe (Still debating but i may go with the axe). The wings being taken I got the idea from Carnival Row, everything else is up to my DM on details.
I like the overall concept of this character. Now for your weapon I'd say use the great axe because it is mechanically better for a barbarian due to the brutal critical. So on crits you be getting an additional 1d12 instead of a 1d6. In short, it'd be like this for crits at each tie (I will not be including str or other factors that may be included for your group;
level 1-8 - 2d12 vs 4d6 - min 2/4, max 24/24, average 14/18
level 9-12 - 3d12 vs 5d6 - min 3/5, max 36/30, average 21/24
level 13-16 - 4d12 vs 6d6 - min 4/6, max 48/36, average 28/30
level 17-20 - 5d12 vs 7d6 - min 5/7, max 60/,42 average 35/36
Additionally. To the crit giving a d6 instead of d12.
a thing to note.
a 1d12 is avg dam 6.5 min 1
the great sword 2d6 is avg dam 7. Min 2
not a huge effect. But also something to note.
so for the brutal crit bonus avg 3 dam. (6.5 vs 3.5). Is the brutal crit happening often enough to outpace the normal average damage differences.
That is the main question when it comes to mechanics. You add in the Half-Orc racial Savage Attacks (which is the same as brutal critical but stacks because it's a different name), abilities that extend the crit range and/or provide advantage on the attack and that tips the scale more in favor of the d12. But they'll be close enough that you won't gimp yourself severely by going with the one that fits your character (acknowledging that you aren't a half-orc, just stating some abilities that tip the math in favor of the 1d11).
As an alternative idea you can go Paladin, as the dragonborn bonuses line up really well and with some heavy armor and a shield you can get an impressive AC for tanking. The subclass options could work well depending on how you want to roleplay things; Devotion would work well for a paladin of Bahamut, or maybe you turn the Redemption path on yourself to get your wings back, or Vengeance to take revenge on those who took your wings!

Interesting. Rage over losing the wings that gets channeled into a paladin oath of some kind. Just be aware that rage is specifically incompatible with heavy armor (though you wouldn't get that proficiency through multiclass anyway). However, if you have your dex set at 14, your AC will only be lagging by 1 with the best gear available when comparing medium armor and heavy armor. Alternatively, you could dump int and wis, set charisma to 12 to get the 13 with a racial and lean into the physical stats for unarmored defense. It's pretty MAD and would forgo feats for the most part, but might fit your concept better.
rage isn't inhibited by heavy armor, you wouldn't be able to use unarmored defense if you're wearing armor though
Rage
In battle, you fight with primal ferocity. On your turn, you can enter a rage as a bonus action.
While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t wearing heavy armor:
You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
When you make a melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Barbarian table.
You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
So yes, heavy armor does affect rage.

Both are viable options, but a greatsword would give more consistency due to the smaller damage die
And I'm pretty sure that greatswords would do the same damage on crit, because a greatsword and a greataxe do the same amount of damage
Greataxes use a d12, while a greatsword uses 2d6
So whereas a greataxe would be doing two d12 damage on a crit, a greatsword would be doing four D6s
Nope as you add one die of its type. A d6
