Hi folks, I just rerolled a lvl 5 lore Bard to replace my dead Cavalier. Had 1 session and loved being a spell user. Nervous though, going from a 21AC fighter to a 15AC caster. I used cutting words a few times for my reaction to nuke the DM's roll. DM is making me inform him if im using cutting words blindly as he rolls behind his screen. So I lose a BI even if he never hits.
That being said Im using Cutting words as really my only defense, but I only have 4 of them if I dont give out any BI. I'm coming up on 6th lvl Magical Secrets and thinking of picking up shield and maybe even counterspell to pad defense and more reactions.
Shield spell is worded a bit differently and doesn't mention announcing it before dice is determined. It however does use up a spell slot. Which is my quickest expensed lvl spell, the way i pass out healing word.
Do you think Shield is worth taking or just rely on cutting words to dodge attacks. If I take it, try it, can always replace at lvl 7 i think.
I don't think you can replace magical secrets the way you can regular bard spells. I'd save the level 6 magical secrets for counterspell and fireball. Traditional.
Your DM concealing rolls makes "after the roll before knowing the result" a moot distinction.
Shield is worth taking not only because of the wording but also because it lasts a duration and therefore can be useful against many attacks instead of a single roll. Using shield against attacks like that also leaves more uses of cutting words against other checks.
