Hey, looking for advice or opinions on what would be better for multiclassing into cleric. So I have a Lvl 7 Kenku Monk that has a feat into blind fighting already so I didn't want to multiclass fighter. I want to multiclass maybe into cleric with a domain that will give me martial weapon proficiency. I was thinking maybe either Twilight Domain for the 300 darkvision I could share and possible other awesome perks if I move into cleric past level 1.... or War domain for the extra bonus action attack when I run out of ki points during a fight. What do you guys think?
Are you multi classing into cleric for role play reasons or power reasons?
What sort of martial weapons are you planning on using?
What is your ability stats?
At present the best you can do with your melee attacks is 1d8+dex using a quarterstaff (if you have both hands free, otherwise 1d6+dex) your bonus attack (or flurry of blows if you use a ki) do 1d6+dex. At range the best you can do it 1d6+dex.
Getting access to martial weapons would allow you to use a rapier for 1d8 while holding something in your other hand, even if you are constantly holding something (say a lantern) this is an extremely small gain and you can usually manage to keep your hand free for compat (say get light cast on something you are wearing). It would also allow you to increase you ranges attack damage to 1d8+dex but again that is a tiny gain. Once you hit monk level 11 you up all your monk weapon and unarmed strikes to 1d8+dex anyway
The only way I can see martial weapons having a significant impact is if you have ridiculasly high strength for a monk. With a greatsword you will do 2d6+str damage but unless your strength is as good as your dex you will hit less often.
War priest also does very little for you. it lets you take a weapon attack as a bonus action (about) 4 times a day, as a monk you can make an unarmed strike as a bonus action every single round so at best this will give you on average (given you can now use a rapier) 4 extra points of damage a DAY.
Twilight cleric is extremely strong 300ft dark vision (for the whole party when you need it) can help a lot, twilight sanctuary is aso a source of a significant amount of temporary hit points if you take a second level. Peace clerics' emboldening bond is arguably more powerful (an it scales up as you level) though channel divinity is not as good as the Twilight clerics.
While Eyes of night and emboldening bond are good as a monk you want all the ki you can get , you will also be delaying when you get your monk features, taking a level of cleric next will delay maxing out dex (or wis if you already have dex 20). You will be (at least) level 10 before you can run up vertical walls (It depends on the DM but indoors against a flying creature I could often run up a wall and leap off it to attack). You will be at least level 11 before you are immune to desease and poison (immunity to poison is huge), Maybe the final boos in your campaign will be at level 14 and you will really miss not being proficient in all saves.
Monks don't multiclass well, if you are doing for roleplay reasons pick what is most appropiate for the character, if you really want to multiclass into cleric but want to do so in a way that makes you as powerful as possible pick Twilight or Peace but accept you will probably be better off as a single class.
Thank you for that insight! We are playing CoS and I'm the only melee really. So we are trying to figure out the best way to use the Sun Sword. If I don't get martial proficiency to use it with Dedicated Weapon, then the only other person able to use it is a Battle Smith Artificer who doesn't like being up close.
But I guess maybe I don't "need" to use it either and I can just keep going as straight Monk.
But it is a Longsword, Martial weapon, so I would still need to either IMO waist a feat slot instead of gaining 2 dex. Or I need to multiclass to something that gets Martial Weapon proficiency.

Well that certainly informs your options heavily. Although knowing your subclass would also help. Good news though, Monks can kick serious ass with the Sun Sword all on their own, and the Cleric multiclass can help in other ways.
So, you can already use your existing monk proficiencies for the Sun Sword. You can make your normal attacks with it just fine, no Dedicated Weapon needed. However you cannot use it for your Martial Arts bonus action. Since you seem to be using Tasha's, you can use Ki-Fueled Attack to use your Bonus Action to attack with the Sun Sword. Ki-Fueled Attack requires you to have spent a Ki during your Attack Action. So if you used Focused Aim to make a miss a hit, you've also bought another Sun Sword bonus attack. If you're a Kensei you could also use Deft Strike to add a bit more damage, and buy that bonus attack. Three Sun Sword hits is nothing to scoff at, but it is contingent on how much Ki you have left.
If you choose to multiclass, War domain is quite powerful. You get the Bonus Attack with Sun Sword a few times a day, free. You also get Divine Favor for yet more Radiant damage per hit (with your weapon or fists) and Shield of Faith for better AC, plus whatever else you pick for Cleric. Go to Level 2, can use Channel Divinity to add a +10 to a weapon attack and virtually ensure a hit. So you will be able to get a lot of mileage out of the Sun Sword. I wouldn't take Level 3 for War domain though, Magic Weapon is pointless with the Sun Sword, Spiritual Weapon is okay for attack from afar, I guess.
Twilight Domain is overpowered bullshit. I have feelings about it and its features. However, it would serve you and your party well in CoS. The darkvision is honesty kinda gamebreaking and I dislike the idea of the PCs seeing better in Barovia than the monsters living there, but your party could use it. Distance isn't the real limiting factor in Castle Ravenloft anyway. Vigilant Blessing is... eh, okay. Faerie Fire is alright, Sleep won't do you much good against the Undead. Unless some of your party has no darkvision I would not take this for Level 1. With Level 2 comes Twilight Sanctuary, which lasts a minute, and every time you or an ally ends their turn in it, they get 1d6+2 temp hit points or ends the Charmed or Frightened Condition. That last one can be really relevant, depending on how your GM is playing Strahd. I probably wouldn't trade the Monk's Level 8 ASI for Level 3 Cleric, but Moonbeam could be useful.
For more thematic reasons, there's the Light domain, relevant due to the church of the Morning Lord in Barovia. Not as mechanically useful but it still fits the campaign quite well and the Sun Sword in particular. The Cleric class gives a bunch of benefits on its own anyway.
All around benefits to multiclassing, some extra spells. Cantrips for Sacred Flame/Toll the Bell for ranged damage if you don't risk getting close. Guidance if allowed. Light as a substitute for darkvision. Ritual Casting is always a nice perk. Bless and Healing Word have their place. If you actually went for Level 3, Aid, Prayer of Healing, and whatnot are useful.
Downsides to multiclassing: assuming your campaign caps out at Level 10, the last two Monk features you can live without. The Unarmored Movement Improvement could be very helpful in running over water or up and down walls, but you can probably live without it. Purity of Body for immunity to poison damage is a nice passive, but in practice is probably niche. You'll only have 8 Ki to 10 Ki, which hurts you more. If you manage to sweet talk your DM into giving you the new Dragonhide Belt (bonus to saving throw DCs of Ki features, roll Martial Arts dice for Ki restore), then that matters a whole lot less.
So that mostly sums up pros and cons or the multiclass from my view. Depending on your subclass that could change but not much. I suppose you could choose to change your subclass at Monk 8, but that's a different story entirely.
Just make sure your DM approves of the multiclass, and please warn them what you may be unleashing on their campaign. Especially the Twilight domain.

Sun sword you have to be proficient in short or long sword to be proficient in sun blade read description
