Want to build a shadow monk(batmanesque) creating darkness(or having others do it for me) and being able to shadow step in particularly on mages and archers etc. I want to get advantage in magical darkness and seen some debate on whether you can shadow step into magical darkness as you can’t see inside it (seen some you can step into the edge so think it’s DM dependent). Hence I want devils sight but blind fighting “coukd” be a compromise.
warlock and sorcerer are out due to me needing charisma as a dump stat. Eldritich initiate needs spellcasting so needs multiclass. I will probably go variant human for the feat given the ability score demands. Not been a monk before and more than any other class it seems to be thou shalt not multiclass so a bit scared of doing so.
Have 3 options(there may be more)
1 fighting initiate blind fighting. Doesn’t fix the shadow step grey area but avoids multiclassing
2 start as fighter for 1/2 levels with blind fighting . Pro is it bulks me up a bit, I get fighter goodies and probably most exciting given it’s asi all the way a feat that would fit the build( mobility, sentinel or mage slayer I want them all but in the other options may get none 😭) Con is still grey area on shadow step and multiclassing
3 Twilight cleric with eldritch initiate. Thematically works and gets me devils sight, dark vision and some nice spells. Con is multiclassing and not got the feat from 2
What would you choose and when does multiclass hurt most(doubt this character will get beyond level 10/11) so pain would be felt?
Make a 5th level shadow monk and take 3 level in the Ranger class to have the spellcasting ability and for the bonus of the gloom stalker. With the Ranger you can take the feat Eldritch Adept that give you the Devil sight.

Prerequisite: Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature
Studying occult lore, you have unlocked eldritch power within yourself: you learn one Eldritch Invocation option of your choice from the warlock class. If the invocation has a prerequisite, you can choose that invocation only if you’re a warlock and only if you meet the prerequisite. Whenever you gain a level, you can replace the invocation with another one from the warlock class.
If the app allows It, I think that there are no problem. Why thinking about a bug. Let's take It and play....DM agree and also myself as a player and a DM. Following the app Is the easisest way for everything.
It IS a bug, RAW Shadow monks don't have the Spellcasting or the Pact Magic feature, which is a prerrequisite for the Eldritch Adept feat. Now, that is not to say that your DM won't allow you to take it, but that's walking into homebrew territory. The app does not interpret the rules with a 100% accuracy, and this is such a case. But as I said, a DM can just lift the prerrequisite for the feat no problem, and some may choose not to do so because they follow the RAW; both options are acceptable.

If a DM wants to allow it that’s fine. But just because the app allows it doesn’t make it work according to the rules.
Make an 5th level Aberrant Mind Sorcerer. Then in the app try to swap out your Psionic spell, Arms of Hadar, with something else. You can’t. The app will not allow it even though the book specifically says you can. Because the app has limitations with certain things.
Again, if you as a DM or your DM allows it that is completely cool to do. Just not RAW.
Ok, not RAW, but make sense and I think that most DM allows this. I suspect that what is seen in the app is not a bug but rather intended by the developers to allow for some freedom.

Sorry but, It’s a bug.
The actual printed words in the actual book says you need either the spellcasting feature (shadow monks don’t) or the Pact Magic feature (shadow monk don’t).
And compare this prerequisite to the Feat Spell Sniper which specifically says “Prerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell” which shadow monk can and qualifies for this feat.
If the developer wanted to give more freedom they would have used this wording, but they didn’t.
Ok, this is RAW undoubtedley. Thanks for the clarifications.
Regarding the game, I still prefer to let the player do only what the app allows. So monks can take the eldricht adept feat while Aberrant Mind Sorcerer cannot swap spells. Personal choice, clearly.
My DM allows this and much more. Good DM Indeed.

As a shadow monk doesn't your ability to cast darkness etc from shadow arts qualify you for redditch adept?

No. You need the Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature listed in your class/subclass to get Eldritch Adept. Just being able to cast a spell doesn’t work.

Cool. Thanks for that, I've been playing it wrong upto now.
D&D beyond app allows to take the Devil sight feat if you are a monk (feat not allowed do not appear in the list).

It’s a limitation of the character builder or a bug. Monks can’t take Eldritch Adept without spellcasting or pact magic features, unfortunately.
