What is the best race for monks in your opinion. In my opinion i think grung is the best race for grung because of their poison skin they can deal poison damage on fist attacks and also on attacks on any monk weapon with piercing damage.
I here tortles are pretty good at being monks (heroes in the half shell)
I was literally in a side quest yesterday where one of the players was a Tortle monk/barbarian. It was a pretty slick build. He didn't min-MAX it this way, but between the Tortle AC bonus, and either the Monk's wisdom bonus to AC or the Barb's Con bonus plus shield, you can really do a lot armor-wise.

You guys are doing it wrong rules wise as a Tortle's Natural Armor cannot be stacked with Unarmored Defense. You have to pick between Natural Armor or one of the Unarmored Defense options of the Barbarian or Monk.
As for my pick for a Mink race, I would personally try Fairy for my next Monk whenever that may happen. Something about a small midget flying around the field while punching and kicking things to death tickles my curiosity.
I know aarakocras get banned at some tables and a lot of that is how good they are as monks.
Being Monks had little to do with it. The reason they got banned so much was because they had 50 ft flying speed. With the release of Monsters of the Multiverse they became more balanced and a little less banned.
Bit late to the party but my vote would be bugbear:
Long Limbed allows you to go in, make your attacks and retreat without drawing the op attacks or spending a ki and bonus action to disengage. (Mobile is an alternative but monks are MAD so a feat is a major investment)
Sneaky: You are likely to want ot take stealty anyway so this is in effect a skill of your choice
Surprise attack: You should be good at initiative so should have a target most combats at level 2 you can do a quarterstaff attack and flurry of blows does 1d8+2d4+6d6+3*dex for an average of over 40 damage if all attacks hit (no crits).
Darkvision, fey ancestry and powerful build are also great on any character.
If your DM allows it, there is the Naga from Plane Shift - Amonkhet. It's the team from MTG. Poison bite (this is where it is at), constrictor tail, poison immunity, etc. These Nagas do have arms.
I always pick human. In 1e Humans were the best class because they didn't have any level limitations (except for a specific class). The non-human and half human types had their special abilities, that gave them an unfair advantage as player characters so they had both level limits and some couldn't be certain classes.
Aside from that. I will always pick Human, no matter game it is. I won't pick a non-human just because of stats.
Just to add on to my earlier comment. I had stopped playing a PC in D&D to play an Immortal from Basic D&D TSR days. Since then I have been hooked on playing godlike beings. WotC had some sections in 3.0 or 3.5 I think, to create a god PC. I was like, "eh". Especially when they were lauding Epic heroes who sounded like they could thrash around Gods like the Hulk did Loki (or Thanos did everyone).
Now I see there is the Aasimar race who have ancestry to the Celestials or something similar. I have decided to take that, and my abilities were already good, now I have a 19 in Dex and I think 17 in Con and Wis now. Plus all of the Aasimar abilities and things you can get at 3rd level.
Monks I think should be Human, and Aasimar are humans for the most part.
Personally? Humans, half-elves, and elves make the best monks. Elves have Dexterity +2 for their ability score increase, and humans and half-elves are super versatile races. Yes, monks are mostly hand-to-hand combat warriors, but the Monk class is an extremely versatile class. Monks can be the substitute for a fighter, rogue, or even wizard (if you play Way of the Four Elements the right way) in a party. The features from Ki points make them great at combat, and at high levels, their features make them super resilient characters. All of thise works perfectly with the races I mentioned.
Current Campaign(s): Dungeons, Darkness, Drow, and Demons, an Out of the Abyss Adventure, Dungeon Delvers, a Dungeon of the Mad Mage Adventure, Jungle of Evil, a Tomb of Annihilation Adventure
I honestly love my Rabbit monk its good for movement attacks you can add your proficiency to your initiative not to mention a jump so you cant get attacked when you leave range

Any that does not have a bonus action feature you want to use more than once per combat.
A free feature that either adds to damage or defense.
100% a grung

Can't go wrong with human(v) and grabbing the mobile or crusher feat.
Wood elf +2 dex and +1 wis also +5 to speed fits the monk perfectly

I may be a bit late, but arakocra. Your racial bonuses are good for a monk, and you can become a little f22-raptor with a 75 FOOT FLYING SPEED
DM: “Who’s your patron?”
Warlock: “Ummm”
DM: “Hurry Up”
Warlock: “yOu”
