Has anyone else purchased the long death monk and seen it? It looks very overpowered, not being able to go down really. Is this better than what I think it is?
Yeah, the Way of the Long Death monk is fairly hardy, but lacks the utility the other monk sub classes get.
-3rd-level, Gain temporary HP when you kill a creature. Not bad, but also not as versatile as say the Open Hand monk that gets 3 different combat options when they hit a creature with FoB or the Shadow monk who gets access to four spells and a cantrip.
-6th-level, use an action to cause the Frightened condition on creatures that fail a save. Again, not bad. I'd say it's in line with what the other monk traditions get at 6th-level.
-11th-level, spend a ki point to avoid being reduced to 0 HP. This ability sounds really good, and it's not bad, but at 11th-level enemies are full of attacks. You're going to have to make it rain ki if the monsters are determined to take you down, but even then if you're playing at tier 3, death is more of an inconvenience at that point rather than a campaign ending problem like it is at lower levels.
-17th-level, deal a bunch of necrotic damage depending on how much ki you spend where 10 ki = 110 (20d10) necrotic damage. Everyone is kind of a super saiyan at this point in the game, so this is a strong ability, but comparably strong to most other monk sub classes.
The 6th level ability can be hard to deploy since you can't exclude your allies from the fear affect. The 11th level ability is potent, but you're going to burn through ki pretty quickly with it. I don't see the subclass as being particularly overpowered.
I don’t think they are over powered but I believe they are a little bit better than all of the other sub classes just combat wise besides Open Hand. Open Hand for the damage output of a fighter and Long Death for a undying god mode that doesn’t do much damage.
I have a question about this subclass. I play a Half-Ogre monk. { Thats right...fear me } I am new to 5E, and the way some of these subclasses are explained are a little confusing. When I use Touch of Death..is that once per short/long rest, do I have to use a KI point, or can I use that whenever I eliminate an enemy?

A few days late, but it is automatic and requires no investment. Every time you drop a target to 0 HP, you get the temp HP.
It is important to remember that temporary HP don't stack.

Thanks for the reply.
A lot of the claims about Long Death being overpowered seem to based on the mistaken belief that temporary hit points stack.
I know they don’t stack. I think the main thing is the 6th and 11th level abilities.
