So, with TCoE out I have been experimenting on creating fiction characters. My favorite by far has been creating John Wick. So initially I had thought Fighter-Gunslinger with the Gunner and Brawler feat because of the number of attacks, firearm proficiency and hand to hand combat enhanced by the Brawler feat. Then, I saw the Optional Additional Feature for Monks: Dedicated Weapon.
So please correct me if I am wrong (I am fairly new to D&D):
Monk 5th lvl (any flavor really but I would say Way Open Hand because I do not like Way of the Kensei)
Martial Arts: perfect flavor and mechanics for the close combat expert John Wick.
Gunner Feat: allows him to use guns at close range ignoring disadvantage and also gives the monk a much needed range option.
Dedicated Weapon: as the pistol in the DMG does not have the Heavy or Special properties it technically applies as a monk weapon, so you get your bonus unarmed strike.
Extra Attack: combined with gunner feat, you get two shots on each of your rounds and then one unarmed strike (that is without using flurry of blows).
Any comments and recommendations are welcomed, especially if I am wrong in something.
I am in a Wildemount campaign and currently using a Way of Mercy Monk (almost at 4th lvl) and need to decide if I will be taking the gunner feat to build an angel of death and life like John Wick.
There’s a small hole in this. Dedicated Weapon requires a Simple or Martial weapon. Firearms are neither, as they’re their own category. I’d allow it, though, in a modernized campaign where firearms are ubiquitous. You may also be able to squeeze off a third shot with Ki-Fueled Attack.
Pretty hard to play a weapon using Monk without playing a Kensei. That said, Tulok has done a pretty neat Kensei-Assassin version of John Wick using hand crossbows. I'd go for that.
I was looking at the DMG on page 268 and firearms, specifically the pistol and musket, are considered "Martial Ranged Weapons", but I get what you mean as a different category. Hopefully my DM will agree with us lol.
True! the Ki-fueled Attack works, but then I need to find a way to spend a ki point during the first two shots (do not think he will allow focused aim). Regardless, I will keep this in mind, thanks =).
Hadn’t cross-referenced to the DMG. That should be pretty convincing for most DMs.
Kensei Deft Strike is the easiest path to activating Ki-Fueled Attack. There’s discussion on the longbow Kensei in the Monk sub-forum that’s relevant here as well. If you’re point-blank, Flurry is probably your better option.
