Ok, so Branding Smite only requires a Weapon Attack. I have a light hammer and use my Bonus Action to embue Branding Smite on it and Throw it 20 ft away. The description says it gleams with astral radiance.
Let's say I missed, because my dice hates me and I pretty much just wasted a 2nd level spell by doing a glowing hammer toss. The room is an enclosed space, and my target was near a wall, so my glow-in-the-dark hammer is probably just 5ft near the enemy and I have an ally also near the enemy. Since I missed, I keep concentrating on the spell.
1. Can my ally pick up the Light Hammer and proc Branding Smite on their own? or will it not activate?
2. Can the enemy pick up the weapon and proc it himself? Assume I'm not dropping concentration, will it activate, or does it have to be me?
3. What if I use any other spell smite and hand it to the Barbarian who has a higher STR mod? Can they use the glowing weapon?
The target of the spell is 'self.' The spell wasn't cast onto the weapon, it was cast onto you. The weapon glows when you successfully hit. So your Paladin lets fly with the warhammer, and misses. But their enemy runs away, allowing an attack of opportunity as they run past - BAM! The paladin hits them with a chair leg from a piece of furniture that had been destroyed earlier in the fight. It's glowing with a holy radiance as it successfully delivers the smite. The spell will work on you, for any weapon attack, not just that specific weapon. Just make sure you're in agreement with your DM on what counts as a weapon re: unarmed strikes.

First line of the description “next time you hit a creature.”
It won’t work for anyone else who picks it up, and you can’t pass it around.
