I am currently playing a ranger in my campaign at lvl 5 which I believe I chose Gloom Stalker and I also chose Alertness at lvl 4 as my feat. So basically, I go first most encounters, can almost never be surprised AND I am almost invisible in the dark. I do not understand why people think Ranger is underpowered. Our Barbarian and Monk complain they never get any fun in the attacks.

one subclass example is not enough. Especially since tables will have different amounts of various features. some adventures will never have darkness, some tables dont use feats or other optional rules, some dms will use a lot of blindsight enemies(some will forget it even if their mooks have it)
Now with all that being said, I believe all rangers "can" succeed in a variety of situations better than most other classes. the core features of the ranger give solutions for most problems.
