In Tomb of Annihilation, there is an NPC who has taken the fabled Wind Dukes of Aaqa as her patron in a Warlock Pact. The character is only 2nd level, and it’s unclear from the spells known what “subclass” they are using. It is stated that the character has gained telepathy from her pact, so that led me to think possibly GOO. For those not familiar, the Wind Dukes of Aaqa aka the Vaati are an ancient, quasi-immortal race of extraplanar beings, originating I believe in the Greyhawk setting back in much earlier editions. They have some celestial characteristics, some elemental characteristics(specifically with the Plane of Air) and being ancient, powerful beings from the Outer Planes, certainly could fall into the Great Old One category, although they are benevolent if mostly neutral beings of Law, who fought a great war against Chaos(specifically the demonic Oberyths of the Queen of Chaos and Miska the Wolf Spider). They also forged the Rod of Law for said war, aka the legendary Rod of Seven Parts
So…if I were to create a warlock character that wanted to make these very cool beings their Patron, what subclass would make the most sense? I feel like GOO, Celestial, and Genie all kinda fit, although not perfectly without a little “reskinning”. Don’t particularly want to home-brew a subclass. Thoughts?
For npcs, their abilities aren't always tied to a subclass, since they aren't restricted in the same ways as pcs.
If you wanted to have a Wind duke of Aaqa as a patron, i would recommend the genie (djinn) subclass, or the archfey subclass. For genie, the flavour requires less change, but for archfey the shift is more dramatic. The abilities work well for taking charge, but overall the flavour is widely off.
Celestial is a safe bet though, and requires minimal flavour changes, and definitely work well if you want a more supportive Warlock.

Yeah, certainly aware that NPC characters don’t necessarily follow RAW for player characters. However, you can often still suss out the class/subclass that served as the “inspiration”. I am leaning forwards Genie(Djinn) as it’s seem the closest thematically, and it’s a very cool subclass that I’ve never played. The additional spell list works 100%. Just need to re-flavor the whole “bottled respite” feature, as there is nothing in the lore of the Wind Dukes that I’ve read that really ties into that.
Flavouring it as a space in your patrons domain could work, and remember that it doesnt have to appear as an oil lamp, it could be a ring or gem or something similar.
