When you cast the spell, you can choose one of the normal forms for your familiar or one of the following special forms: imp, pseudodragon, quasit, or sprite.

Are the ones in volo's guide and tomb of annahiliation for player use? Gazer, cranium rat etc..

Oh! Arlong you have brought up the 'left hand doesn't know what the right hands doing' issues - The gazer variant isn't anything to do with the find familiar spell - doesn't even mention it. You need to be a third level spellcaster and might be approached by one if you discover it in the wild - If you harm it then its leaving you forever, if it dies its dead. It isn't a spirit you summon to shape into a creature its a parasitic evil monster hoping to corrupt you just as imps and quasits summoned from the pit or abyss and roaming the world can be variant familiars and again are not spell granted familiars at all. Unless the creature states find familiar / pact of the chain can call it as an optional form it is not a semi immortal creature you can resummon, its just a free willed creature you willingly let link into your mind and talk to your subconscious whilst your asleep.... nothing bad will ever come of that. In all seriousness they should just call the variant thing something else like corruptor not familiar.

Enjoy your descent into evil!
I was looking at volo's guide page 213, and wandered if it was intended to be added for players as well. But I guess not.
Just in case I have missed something (which I probably did):
VARIANT: FAMILIAR
Any spell caster that can cast the find familiar spell (such as an apprentice, warlock, or wizard) is likely to have a familiar. The familiar can be one of the creatures described in the spell (See the Player's handbook) or some other tiny monster, such as a cranium rat, a crawling claw, a gazer, an imp, a psudodragon, or a quasit.
Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Arlong, any familiar not listed in the spell or feature is a Variant and must be approved by your DM first.
Ah, okay. Thanks for clarification.

Yes and many of those creatures have a sidebar on their page mentioning the facts as I described - that isn't a familiar pact its a trap. (unless your GM house rules the consequences away in which case enjoy your non standard familiar :) )
The familiars available to Pact of the Chain Warlock are: Psuedodragon, Imp, Quasit, Sprite, Gelatinous Ice Cube, Tressym, Flying Monkey, Abyssal Chicken, Almiraj, and all other familiars gained through the base Find Familiar spell. Other tiny magic creatures can be used as familiars, but not through the Find Familiar spell. These creatures form magical bonds with the spellcaster. I don't always allow these types of familiars unless they are specifically mentioned as being familiars, such as the Gazer and the Crawling Hand. Still you must find the creature before it can become your familiar and you should consult your dm first. I feel like Gazers would be amazing Warlock Pact of the Chain familiars since they can only be used as familiars by spellcasters of at least 3rd level which is pact boon level.

Finally, please note that creatures listed as becoming familiars in the stat block is not the same as summoning a familiar under the rules of the Find Familiar spell. A summoned familiar is bound to the caster's will, whereas a creature that chooses to become a familiar can choose to break that bond.
I never said that the bonded familiar couldn't, and those familiars except for the Gazer are all familiars you can gain through warlock Pact of the Chain.

Wizards of the coast released the Gelatinous Icecube and a certain magic item in their Tasha's cauldron of everything celebration. It is now official content and can also be used in adventure league.
The 2020 D&D Celebration familiars are not specific to Pact of chain anyone able to cast Find Familiar can use them. Technically they are for AL only, but I suppose if your DM allows it then have at it.
I never said they were specific and AL has THE STRICTEST RULES IN D&D. So if AL allows it than of course normal campaigns can have it, unless the dm specifically says NO.
Interesting thread. Has any of this been changed/clarified by errata since this discussion?
I ask because I'm rolling a warlock with patronage to the fathomless. Interestingly I've created a variant human with a feat at first level: Investment of the chain master.
When you cast find familiar, you infuse the summoned familiar with a measure of your eldritch power, granting the creature the following benefits:
The familiar gains either a flying speed or a swimming speed (your choice) of 40 feet.
As a bonus action, you can command the familiar to take the Attack action.
The familiar’s weapon attacks are considered magical for the purpose of overcoming immunity and resistance to nonmagical attacks.
If the familiar forces a creature to make a saving throw, it uses your spell save DC.
When the familiar takes damage, you can use your reaction to grant it resistance against that damage.
So does this mean my octopus can have a flying speed of 40 feet :-p ...it does say 'your choice', after all.

Pact of the Chain
Find Familiar: does it count as a real imp or something that looks like an imp?
Does Help Action with pets give advantage in combat to ranged attack from allies?

Which rulebook did Gelatinous Icecube come from?
