I would say you still take damage. Simply because in real life (even if you are technically dead) you have a momentum and that causes damage. So you killed it but you you would take damage because it's not a shield spell
"If a creature hits you with a melee attack" that right there answers your question. The trigger for your spells damage is being hit with a melee attack, at which point you take damage. once you have received the damage from being hit with an attack, then your 15 points of damage go through. If your hit you take damage plain and simple, and if your not hit then armor of agathys deals no damage.

I don't mean to necrobump or whatever, but how does the damage work if I had 5 temp hp left and the hit for the rest and then some. Do they still take full damage? for example if I cast it at level 4 and making it 20 temp hp. If I had 5 of that left, and I took damage, does the attacker take that 20 damage still?
They still take the full damage, yes. If you have 5 hp left, the enemy still takes the full 20.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Yes as long as you have at least 1 temp hp (from Armour of Agathys) the attacker takes the full damage.
The OP part of AoA is when cast at higher levels. If you have it cast high level so it grants 40 temp hp / 40 damage and a fighter hits you with 3 attacks in one round. If the first 2 attacks do not deplete the temp hp total and the 3rd attack does, then the attacker takes 120 damage before AoA is depleted and you then take the remaining damage. If the 3rd attack does not do enough damage to deplete the temp hit points then another attack against you does 40 more damage. The next round cast AoA again and you can survive a sustainable amount of damage while dealing massive amounts of AoA damage + your attack damage. It makes people and monsters not want to hit you in melee.

A warlock can't upcast AoA to give 40 temp HP; that would require an 8th level spell slot, which full casters get 15th level - at 15th level, if the enemy isn't doing more than 40 damage in two attacks, they either did really bad, or they are probably far too weak. In regards to it being OP, the caster would have burned their sole 8th level slot for this, which is a pretty solid investment for something that may not even be triggered (the number of times I've cast AoA, only to not be hit the entire fight... )
Yeah and with a one hour duration its a hard sell for your valuable warlock slots. If you could short rest cheese it as its duration was more like Hex. it may have remained valuable enough to keep. As is, I don't think I'd keep it even on a hexblade.
Here’s my conundrum based on the wording. If I cast armor of agathys as a lvl 1 spell and get hit for 3 damage, does the creature take 5 cold damage or 3? AND having 2 temp hp remaining after that first hit, if I get hit again (let’s say for 7), does that second creature take 2 or 5 cold damage?
So if a creature w multiple attacks hits me twice w a lvl 2 casting active, and can’t get through the 10 dmg w one hit it takes 20 damage! What an amazing spell! Maybe I should lower my ac…
in our games it plays more like a sanctuary spell and just temp hit points. The spell is visible, and most creatures choose not to attack the person in melee glowing with frost energy.
Yeah I wonder how my gm will handle it. By virtue of it being warlock only, I’d rationalize that it’s a rare sight and difficult for monsters to identify the danger. You’d think warlocks would be rare in any setting compared to other casters. My warlock is a front liner too so they may be forced to hit me…
You see that's where I agree that it is confusing. Because I've always read that "hit" and "damage" were 2 separate things. And have always been told that spells do exactly what they say they do. So reading it the way it's written is what got me to this conclusion. I managed to find this same question answered over at this other site. With a Jeremy Crawford Twitter link in there too.
Brh I think you have to bend all rules of logic and dnd standards to reach that conclusion; a swung axe isn't suddenly going to lose all momentum at the moment of impact just because your skin is cold, otherwise the spell would add to your ac, not just temporary hit points.. not to mention the spell had to damage your temporary hit points to trigger, so it's already established you take damage
Thanks for the input, but if you would have just read down a few replies on the first page of this post, you would have seen that we got it all figured out... over FOUR years ago. Not sure why people are still replying to this post like it's some kind of brand new question?
In the PHB the answer to this question comes from point #3 under the rules for "Making an attack".
"Resolve the attack. You make the attack roll. On a hit, you roll damage, unless the particular attack has rules that specify otherwise. Some attacks cause special effects in addition to or instead of damage."

For whatever reason it was at the top of the thread list for me as if it was new or recently added to. Never have I ever, and probably never will I ever regularly check dates on posts. I assume if it's not archived it's still open to input.

It is a simultaneous situation
