In my game I have an 8th level Bard who with their next level wants to multi class as a Warlock of the Fathomless. Would the bard gain access to only 1st level warlock spells, or would they be able to use 4th level warlock spells? Also, would they take on new spell slots given by the warlock class?
They get the cantrips, including Eldritch Blast, and they can only cast 1st level warlock spells. But they can read any level warlock scrolls, which they could not do otherwise.
The real benefit is at 2nd level they can get 2 invocations, which can be really powerful.
Warlock spellcasting does not stack with other spellcasting. Your warlock pact slots will be the same as a warlock that starts the game as one. But they come back after a short rest and can be used to cast any 1st level spells you know, not just warlock spells, so even 1st level slots are useful at a high level. Any 1st level spell that you want to cast often is a good use for these slots.
Agreed on the real power coming with second level invocations. Picking up agonizing blast to boost eldritch blast will give you a consistent attack for the rest of your career. I'm a big fan of taking a third level as well to make those slots level 2 and to pick a pact. Mirror Image is a great second level spell you could use those pact slots for, making sure you're well protected in combat. But the real reason is because I hate the flavor of warlocks that never seal their pact. It's like a guy that gets engaged but then takes years to get married.
I kind of like not sealing the pact for RP reasons. You have been tainted by that which must not be speaken of, yet have resisted it. Some day you may succumb to the whispering in the dark, but not today.
That's fair, and if you really own it, then the RP potential is definitely there. I'm dubious most level 2 warlock dips are made for RP though. That's like saying people take sharpshooter because it makes you a more interesting character. Most people stop at 2 because it's more efficient for their build, not because their character has the willpower to resist the influence of their patron.
