I am in a new campaign and playing a wizard for the first time. I have leveled up to a Wizard 2nd level. My online character sheet says my hit points dice is 2d6 or 4 points using the non-roll options. I have 14 hit points it says. I don't see how it got to that.
1st is 6+2 = 8HP
2nd is 8+4 = 12 HP.
Or it should be 16HP (6+4+4)
How is it 14?
And for that matter, if it is 2d6 and the number never goes higher than 4, wouldn't you be better off rolling the 2d6?
Wizards get a d6 for hit points. All characters add their constitution modifier every time they level up. All characters also start with max hp at level 1. So at level 1, you get 6+con modifier, which I’m guessing is +2 for you, so 8. At subsequent levels, you can either roll the die, or take the average, rounded up. For a d6, the average roll is 3.5, so it goes to 4. Then you add in the 2 from your con mod for a total of 6. Add that to your 8 from first level, and you have 14. As you progress, you’ll keep adding 6 per level.
The reason to take the average of 4+con, instead of rolling, is if you roll, there’s only 2 chances of 6 you’ll do better, but 3 you’ll do worse, and 1 where you tie.
What were your initial stats? What was you initial spell list? What background, race, etc. were you?
I am thinking of playing a Wizard for the first time and my DM wants us to play humans. I've not played a wizard before.
Awesome, hopefully he lets you do a variant human for the free feat. If he allows Strixhaven backgrounds (or failing that, spelljammer backgrounds), go for that for another free feat (and added spells for Strix). Otherwise, I'd use sage. Starting spells, I usually chose some defensive ones (absorb elements, mage armor, shields, silvery barbs) depending on the build (and race). And firebolt and mage hand. If I have access to guidance (like through a feat), I take it. Stas: INT is # 1 and then CON or DEX depending on which of the 2 you prioritize. STR is lowest.

Thanks for the explanation. Sad to say then I shorted my rogue of hit points for 2 1/2 years
