Ok, I understand you get 2 free spells from leveling up. To clarify though, does this mean, I've leveled up, I can go through the list of spells and choose 2 of my liking, or that each time I level up, 2 slots are added then on long rests I have to study to learn new spells found along my journey. I know that other spells can be added in the latter manner, just wanted to clarify with the ones from leveling up.
You gain an additional 2 spell slots at 2nd level. This means that your character will have the capacity to cast additional spells - from any in which they know. Once these spell slots are cast, they are spent until the rest occurs. Ig I should clarify my question. Wizard level 3. Ik how the spells work, my question in learning them, is can I choose any spell from the list, or for roleplaying sake, do I have to have found say a tome or spellbook that even though I learn at no cost, it explains how I would have access to said spells, or I just pulled scorching ray out of nowhere and learned it. DM basically wanted me to make a list of spells I wanted and through leveling up, i had to learn these(almost like 3.5) even if it didnt cost. Does that make sense?
It’s assumed that you’re studying, researching spells, experimenting, and learning during down time. The same way fighters are assumed to be practicing fighting, learning new fighting styles, etc.. It’s abstracted out unless you want to role play it.
Per the rules, you can pick any two spells on the Wizard spell list as long as they are of spell levels you can cast. Per the rules, you do NOT need to have some tome or spell scrolls, and are only limited to those spells. Finding Wizard spellbooks and spell scrolls are the ways your Wizard will learn ADDITIONAL spells, beyond the 2 you learn at each level.
It is assumed that you WILL find spell scrolls and the like, and that your Wizard's spellbook will eventually contain more than the 6+(2 x lvl) spells via leveling up.
To expand on Tim's point, it's assumed that your character is learning new spells on their own, making notes as they make breakthroughs, resulting in learning these 2 spells during level up. This is why it can basically be whatever you want on the spell list, cause your character can be working on whatever might strike their fancy, and furthermore make breakthroughs on spells that might not be their focus at the moment.
Hope that helps!
