Long story short, I any homebrewed backgrounds after the 2024 PHB release, I can't control which ability scores can be increased. Like the title said, I wanted to make copies of the 2024 backgrounds, just to give them 3 origin feat options to choose from for each background, the only thing I don't like about the new backgrounds is being tied to one specific origin feat, takes away some of the choice and variations, I was able to figure that out. However, I noticed that as soon as I made a copy, even without any changes, it removes the ability score section in the character builder from the background and moved it to the abilities section.
The criminal background says something like "The criminal background allows you to choose between Dex, Con, & Int...." and lets you do a +1/+2 spread or +1 to all 3. I like that, however, when I copy the Criminal background, that is removed, and in the Abilities window (took me a moment to even see it there), there is an ability score increase window labelled "Origin", where I can do the same +1/+2 or +1 to three scores, but it lists all of the ability scores. So I can't control which scores can be increased and I can't keep that in the backgrounds window in the character builder, having it move to the ability window can be confusing. I like the homebrewing stuff on Beyond, but so much of it is confusing and not intuitive at all, with only a little tutorial or explanations online. Anyone know how I can do this? Just mimic the 2024 backgrounds to give a description and 3 scores to choose from in the backgrounds window?
Another note I discovered, the ability score improvement section from these custom background does allow player to put 3 points into one skill. If you select the "Increase three different scores" option, it has 3 drop downs, select an ability does not remove it from the other dropdowns, allowing them choose Dex +1 x3 for example. I've tested it myself.
