Cross-Linking and Tooltips
We are excited to add cross-linking and tooltips to the D&D Beyond Compendium, Listings, and Forums!
You will now see links for all the spells, items, monsters, conditions, skills, and senses that appear in the descriptions of full text of other elements.
All links will use the established colors (spells = purple, magic items = blue, monsters = red, rules = green).
If you are using DDB on deskstop, you will see a tooltip for the element when you hover over the link. Tooltips do not appear on mobile, but the link still clicks through to the relevant details page.
Additionally, you can tag spells, magic items, monsters, conditions, skills, and senses yourself on the forums! To do so, you add the following bracketed text before each element:
Please keep in mind it will take a little while for all links in every place to be updated with this feature. We ask that you hold off until tomorrow to post any feedback about elements that aren’t linked properly.
The cross-linking is a perfect example of what this kind of tool can provide that isn't available elsewhere. It's really ideal for a one-stop-shop reference guide, and it's glorious that it carries over to the forum so mechanical questions become easy to answer.
Out of curiosity - are there an internal design guidelines for colour? I ask because colour is all over the place - the tooltip links are a great use of it to tag it to the subcategories, absolutely, but then you have colours for rarities of magic items, and other colours for ability scores, and in some cases there is substantial overlap. This is all going to get confusing for end-users in terms of distinguishing "what does green mean now?" It would help to have consistent guidelines for colour as the resource grows.
Edit: Uhhh... Bless the devs for doing this, if we're going with the theme!
That is awesome! Now, let me be the first complaint (okay, probably not first)....
So, I hover over a monster, say quasit. That monster has darkvision. I can't see what darkvision actually does because the pop-up disappears as soon as I try to move off the name of the monster. Is the plan to have nesting pop-ups or is the right answer "Just click through, ya lazy bastard"?

This is awesome. My rouge is about done with first quest. The Dungeon Master is excellent, graphics are great, the story line is exciting, and I am in trouble. Forums have always confused me, I don't know where to reply, so many places to get lost. I am getting a lot of emails, but clicking the link does not work. So there you go.
Playing alone in this game is NOT good. I have yet to friend anyone. I miss playing with out a computer. Friends sitting around, talking, shouting, laughing, having a good time.
Now, a new obstacle, mouse and key board. I am learning how to control my character, a slow task for me. The Key Mapping in the game is not user friendly. I spend a great deal of time in there, trying different keys and changing others. The defaults given either don't work or I don't understand them. I cannot find battle information, statistics of hits, misses, features used, so I don't know if I am executing the moves properly. I really am not fighting yet, just hitting keys and mouse buttons in a disorganized frenzy. I cannot get a lock on the target. These are skills which I have not used before. Playing these types of games was too time consuming, so I never played them. Now I have all the time that is left to me.
Once I get a handle on this, the game will be more enjoyable. Moving around is still difficult for me. I run into everything and in a battle forget it. But the DnD is still there, which I love. So when I learn how to walk, I can then concentrate more on the game mechanics.
I am going to go now. I will update later. Maybe even in the right room.
Can we get [item] to be an alias for [magicitem]? It's less typing, and we're all lazy around here :)
Plus, the icons at the top say "Items" not "Magic Items"
We may eventually tool-tip regular items too, and they would need different behaviors versus magic items, so that's why we went with the [magicitem] tag.

Fair enough, I guess. I mentioned in the count to 20 thread that there are no naming collisions (that I'm aware of, at any rate) between magic and mundane items, so even if [item] was used for both, it'd be possible to determine whether the linked item is magical or not, and adjust behavior accordingly.
(That being said, you know the code and I don't, so such a lookup may or may not be feasible without rewriting swaths of the tooltip code)

Deva, just to test if it works. :)
Also, the above monster has innate spells, that are described in the Spell section, should there be links in those too? Because there ain't those.
