A mod on their discord just confirmed that you only get early access if you bought the physical + digital bundle. Like everybody else here I feel cheated by their lack of clarity about this, and the fact that all 3rd party news sites were also mislead speaks volumes. Well that’s the last time I’m spending my money here that’s for sure!!
How did dndbeyond's PR team not make some kind of correction to this?
This part, specifically:
Although this early access period has traditionally been exclusive to digital versions, a new program is expanding the early access to apply to physical copies bought in local game stores. Vecna: Eve of Ruin is the first of theDungeons & Dragons 2024 releases to be distributed with this model, which incentivizes purchasing from smaller stores rather than major retail outlets. It's only applicable for in-store or pickup, so there's no way to get a physical copy through the mail early, but it's a big step forward for those who prefer to have their books on a shelf.
NOTE:
Both the physical and digital preorders of Vecna: Eve of Ruin unlock the same bonuses.
In addition to the early access period and digital trinkets that are unlocked in D&D Beyond, preordering the new adventure book will also grant customers digital access to a special adventure called Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye. This D&D Beyond-exclusive product is a single-session adventure, commonly known as a one-shot. This journey will prepare players for their fight against Vecna in Eve of Ruin, acting as something of a prequel to the new Dungeons and Dragons adventure book. Nest of the Eldritch Eye becomes available on April 16.
Hey there: I'm starting the adventure tonight, and I have early access to the book without any issues (pre-ordered the bundle). I upgraded my account to Master level, and now I'm trying to figure out how to use the maps tools with the adventure. Any help would be wonderful.
Hi there mods, i pre-ordered my digital copy of vecna eve of ruin on February 21 and thought I would get early access to the book for pre ordering so early. I can see the book appear on dndbeyond but only to the table of contents. Then when I click on a chapter it forwards me to the new market place. I would have really liked to access the book early and didnt understand that I would have to purchase the physical + digital bundle. Is there a way I could still access to digital book early? I preordered my book from my local comics & gaming shop, cause i wana support these small local shops that add to my community. I am happy to pay a little extra more if there is a way I could access the book this week, as I will be the DM and this is my first time actually DMing a longer cqmpaign for my group. I am really excitied about this adventure and happen to have a 12h train ride coming up tomrrow, where i would have plenty of time to start reading it. So please if any of you who have the power to give access can do it. You'd make a long time loyal customer super happy ❤️
Posting the same feedback I gave on Discord here in hopes of some kind of response:
The Eve of Ruin rollout has been really disappointing. Article after article from third party websites confirms that we were supposed to receive the same early access with both the digital and physical release (here's an example from Screenrant: https://screenrant.com/dnd-vecna-eve-ruin-release-preorders-price-info/ ). A mod in the support channel argued that dndbeyond can't be held responsible for the reporting of third party websites. My issue with this is that because so many outlets misrepresented this information, I can only assume that the press release must have been woefully vague. No corrections were ever issued despite the articles being weeks or months old. That was absolutely your PR department's responsibility to correct, and now your company is profiting as a result of the bad information. I really think this deserves a more public, transparent, and apologetic response.

It needs to made clear that the promise of early access was also made on DnD's own website, on the order page itself, before the Marketplace switch over. I know this because I never looked on any 3rd party sites. I preordered on the DnD marketplace and did so solely because I was being promised early access.
I think the reason so many 3rd party sites had this information on their sites is because it was on the Vecna order page on DnD's own website. They advertised this perk and then pulled a bait and switch a week before the early release. I can only assume that this was a mistake by them, that someone screwed up, as a bait and switch in this context provides them nothing but backlash. So, I can only hope they make right on this by just unlocking access to all preorders and moving on. They probably won't though. In which case I think they're going to loose some customers. Who the hell is running this company? Are they drunk? I just don't get it.

Yes, this is truly absurd. Up until the last moment, the countdown timer for early access was active on the sales page, like a huge billboard implying there was still time to purchase. There's no justification for it.
I'm a foreign consumer, and I paid even more in my currency just to be able to read the adventure in early access.
And you won't have early access, because we didn't qualify according to them despite their muddy marketing that has left ALOT of people confused and disgruntled. My first physical + digital order ended up in huge delays because of a recall on the cards. I paid well over £100 for that. There was zero chance I was going to preorder the next physical + digital bundle, but a player at my table that looked forward to Vecna bought me the adventure digital only, with the understanding that we can start rolling dice after today. What am I going to tell my table? WOTC pulled a WOTC. It's a verb. A quick google demonstrates that. I feel for the community managers trying to broker peace, but I am in their corner and hope that they keep up the fight.
Like so many others, I ordered the book early because of the promise I saw on the D&D marketplace of early access. We wrapped up other campaigns and ended things early because May 7th was the access date..
Supremely disappointed that suddenly it changed and you can't access it. I have a Master Subscription and did the legendary bundle because of how much I play D&D, Four times a week, and the only reason I didn't order both the physical and digital bundle together was because my Local game store is managed by a buddy of mine, and since the digital preorder gave me digital early access, I figured i'd just wait to get the physical book with him, since it didn't make a difference. I pre-ordered way back in the early-middle of April. After dropping thousands of dollars on D&D stuff and D&D beyond, this is really disappointing.
That is definitely not a good feeling. Shady to be honest. Not really surprising given how hard a certain company has worked for the last 18 months or so to continuously given themselves PR black eyes
Pre ordered Feb 18th and at the time the Old Dndbeyond main page article did say preorder for early access on the digital version as well, but magically that article takes you to new marketplace not old marketplace and their order history is so basic it doesn’t include details to go back and look at.
I'm curious to see how wotc behaves in this case. I hope that they have learned from the entire ogl controversy that honest, quick and open communication is extremely important in such a situation. Mistakes can happen. Whether the community is upset about this depends on how this mistake is responded to. So wotc, don't make the same mistakes. Make an honest statement as soon as possible, even if at first it's just "we have to clarify what went wrong"

If mods have stated that the digital only pre-orders don't get early access, how do I start a refund?
I'm alarmed by the number of people feeling deceived. This type of practice ruins the service's reputation. I hope they resolve this.
Digital only pre-orders were explicitly advertised to include early access.
WoTC, you need to make this right. This is absolutely ridiculous.

video summarizes a similar issue well ^
Not the exact issue I’m reporting but it seems that bait and switch really is the best way to describe what’s going on here.

After, although I don't see why that should make a difference.
I preordered the digital version as well and still don't have access. Come on WOTC. This is pathetic.

Still do not have access to this and the countdown ended over 8 hours ago now....
Can we get ANYTHING in terms of communication on why this is happening? Is it bugged? Did the update mess this up?
Like what???? We paid for this and are now 8 hours in silence, what kind of support is this????
