I posted about this before, but there was no response, so I'm hoping this will get noticed this time.
Yah, me too. I think they get all their art directly from WotC with some level of permission to alter it in certain ways for the site, like the transparencies added and whatnot. But at a guess, they probably haven't been given any other file than this one so are waiting on a better one or permissions or that may be the best one available, at all.
Either way, it's pretty minor all things considered.
If you look at a picture of the physical book, the distortion on the nose you've circled lines up with the fold for the front cover. And the distortion at the top lines up with the edge of the cover.
It looks like the modified art that would be used to actually print on the physical book cover. If I had to guess, it was probably done intentionally so that the spine/back cover lined up a specific way, and so that the cover edges looked consistent.
Still, yeah, it would be better to have the unmodified art.

There seems to be some issues with the image file for the cover art of Tomb of Annihilation.
There seems to be a weird kind of vertical slicing/overlap, and it also looks like the top part of the image has been stretched for some reason.
