There is a difference between the Basic Rules and the SRD, though they overlap significantly. Both are freely published by WotC and contain most of the same content, but for different purposes: the SRD gives the framework of the entire game, but not all the options within it, as a skeleton for third parties to create officially-blessed new options to plug into that framework. The Basic Rules give more options for some things (e.g. Backgrounds) but in a narrower scope of the game, so that a narrow game can be played in its entirety as a free preview of the full game. (Also, the Basic Rules were developed at a time when there were no plans for a full SRD, and then those plans changed and the Basic Rules were kind of abandoned in favor of the SRD, but there is still content in the Basic Rules that is not in the SRD).
This site refers to the SRD as the Basic Rules. That's obviously confusing, and to my knowledge incorrect. And it will matter when the character builder goes live: the SRD has only one Background, Acolyte, whereas the Player Basic Rules have 6, IIRC. Will all characters in the beta be Acolytes? Does Curse have permission to use the Basic Rules in addition to the SRD? Has WotC abandoned the old Basic Rules and now refers to the SRD as the Basic Rules? That would be the most confusing possibility.
