I feel like this has to have been suggested before but I couldn't find it in a search. Have any D&D Beyond devs ever talked about custom images for character sheet backgrounds?
While it's nice that we can unlock a selection of official artwork through pre-orders and subscriptions, the actual range on offer is very hit and miss for specific characters. For example, I have a character that's an investigator in Waterdeep, but I don't have access to any good "city street" backgrounds, but I've got tonnes of artwork on my hard-drive that would look great.
I understand that allowing everyone to upload background images could result in a lot of extra storage, but this seems like an ideal feature to limit to subscribers, or even initially just to Master tier subscribers (to gauge the impact it will have), or to manage through some kind of quota to encourage the use of more minimally sized images.
We can already effectively upload unlimited images attached to homebrew, and subscribers can upload unlimited character portraits. While full backgrounds would be larger they could always be resized to keep them manageable (e.g- store as .webp no larger 4k resolution, convert to .jpeg on demand for browsers that don't support .webp), and/or limited by some kind of quota (to encourage the use of more compact images).
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
