I literally cancelled my subscription over this and gave it as the reason. I have DnDBeyond until the middle of Octomber and after my sub ends. And once my current Roll20 game ends, I'm off the site. Unless they bring this back.
I'm not spending $30 for a single race. Or even a dozen races from a book of monsters.
Agreed, I own a lot of the physical books. I love those for reference, but if I want to use this site to make nice character sheets based off of my books, just let me purchase to tools to do so. I don’t even really care that I’m purchasing a couple small things all that much. But when I own the physical Monsters of the Multiverse, it has the rules to make a Duergar character. But if I want to use that to make the sheet one beyond, I should have to re-purchase the entirety of MotM.
I really don't understand this move from them... They will clearly be losing money with this, as anyone that would be buying à la carte will now either homebrew or go elsewhere..
It's an absolute dog shit idea to remove a la carte purchases. It's anti-consumer friendly, has no regard for each user's individual needs or financial capabilities, and doesn't endear existing member's to WotC/Hasboro in anyway. They're making a complete mess of a game that should be reasonably accessible to everyone. I have no idea which idiot on their board thought this was a good idea but they should rethink what changes like this will result.
I for one will no longer be spending any money aside from my current subscriber fees. (And even those will be dropped if the company continues to piss me off.) There was a single spell I wanted to add to my character sheet but the fact that I would have to pay $30+ to purchase a wholeass digital sourcebook is insane and I absolutely refuse to do it. In the past, that would have only cost $1-2 and I'd often add in additional purchases of feats, subclasses, etc that caught my eye. It was wonderful being able to piecemeal pick and choose what I as a player found worthwhile to spend my money on. And while my end total wouldn't have left WotC crying in joy, it's still a hell of a lot better than the fat goose egg they'll be seeing from now on.
I think WotC forgets that we don't need them. D&D has and always will be theater of the mind. Digital character sheets, digital dice, virtual tabletops, etc are simply convenient additives. There's nothing stopping me, or others in my situation, from simply declaring to my DM that I've learned whatever spell, feat, etc. and utilizing them. Our purchases are for convenience sake, not necessity. And while it was reasonable and fair to expect small amounts for us to fully utilize our character sheets, demanding we spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars is beyond the pale.
If any members of the D&D Beyond team are actually reading these messages, I urge you to reestablish the company as decent, ethical retailers before you fully alienate your user base.
As someone who’s budget is extremely thin, this change has ruined any possibility of me buying any content on the website. I cannot afford a whole book just for a race or class I’m curious about. I’m so tired of these big companies screwing over their consumers. This is an awful way to treat your customers. Thanks for ruining another one of my outlets.
It honestly makes me look at my purchases harder as well. Like, will it even be worth it to buy this digital book? It only gives me 1 new species and 3 magic items, vs this other one that gives me 4 new species and 17 magic items. I don't want to pay another $30 for my RotFM book, which I physically own, just to be able to add the magic items to a character sheet. it would only be convenient, not necessary. I'd pay $1 for convenience, I'm not paying $30 for convenience. I'll write it on a post-it note. Why use this digital resource when I could just buy the physical book, then pen and paper the rest of it? Being forced to spend $30 on a single race, or magic item to add to a convenient character sheet builder is a massive deal breaker for me. Lots of people use the site for character sheets, not everyone uses it for modules.
I regret “purchasing” anything on this site. I find it frustrating to use the character builder now that they’ve come out with all the 2024 stuff making all the stuff I own harder to sort through. I know they want to push D&D 2024, but I’m not going to buy it. I wish I had never purchased anything through here.
I want a specific race for an upcoming one shot, I would have bought it a la cart for the “ease” of character building. I’m probably just going to go back to pen and paper. I own the physical books, I don’t need to buy the whole book for one race...
One more voice to add to the growing choir. I've made a lot of a al carte purchases over the years. I can safely say that there are very few, if any, of those purchases that I would have chosen to buy an entire book to gain access to. I probably would have stopped using D&DB entirely if the option didn't exist.
Going forward, I really can't see myself buying any more books just to gain access to the player options, or a particular magic item etc. I might attempt to homebrew something instead but if that isn't viable I'll go back to pen and paper, ie no more D&DB purchases at all.
I can only assume that WotC have calculated they will make more money from a small number of people buying whole books than a larger number of people buying parts of those books. Given the pricing of those a la carte options, I'd be surprised if that were actually true but businesses don't tend to make these decisions without a financial rationale. This is WotC though, so who knows?
At this very moment, I would like to purchase the Twilight Domain Cleric for a player in my campaign. I’m not about to spend $30 for the digital Tasha’s when I have the physical already, I’m sorry, that’s not happening. It would be way better if I spent a $1 for this subclass. I’d happily do that. But now I’ll just homebrew it.
I think we will have to wait for an expansion book before they bring it back. It would need to be a book where they would earn substantial money selling monsters.
Probably reiterating but I am hoping the more they see people saying this the more likely it is to be heard. I feel like the missing thing for WotC on this note is that it's not "if I can't buy à la carte, I'll buy the whole book," it's "if I can't buy à la carte, I'm not buying anything." Has anyone started a petition or anything?

This right here. I'm not sure how they don't get it. Commenting to make sure that this issue stays right near the top of the suggestions forum.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
I only just tried to buy a single species option and saw that ala carte is no longer a thing. Why would they remove this? I have no incentive to buy the whole book for one species. That's a sale they just lost from me.
We are still here and unhappy with this foolish decision and no i personally won't be buying the new books. I'll stick to physical copies and pen and paper i will likely continue to use the content i have but i won't be supporting the cash grab. When you start listening to the community come let me know until then £0 will be spent on dndbeyond or dnd products in general.
I'm seething because I've been wanting to buy 2 whole items for months now. I'm missing the Leonin and Warforged races off of my character creator and it's pissing me off. I'm not dropping $60+ on TWO races that I need. This is one of the worst decisions WotC have ever made. #Bringbackalacarte
And whatever cute little "nooooo, come back we didn't mean it" bullshit apologies they make will only be reversed.
They'll continue to do the same marketing shit to us all six months later, AGAIN, after they go "we're not gonna do that" and then proceed to do exactly what they promised-I'm sorry. Proceed to do exactly what they LIED about NOT doing.
The logic behind the whole idea of "we removed a la carte so now you HAVE to buy our books" is absolutely WILD.
"We took away a la carte because we're tired of getting pennies from you buying only individual things. So you HAVE to buy the whole book now."
NO THE HELL I DON'T AND NO THE HELL I WON'T.
At this point I'm just waiting for them to do something else equally asinine and further lose money on a userbase that has been around for FIFTY years. Hasbro and WoTC can go suck an egg.

Really? Anything to back this up?
It would be wise to listen to this community to bring the a la carte back. They can choose to bring it back or losing (new) customers (again).
I also cancelled my subscription over this crap!
It wasn't the final straw but the plans to delete already purchased content was that pushed me to my limit.
I don't care that they are now backpedaling on that, but they are just going to find another way to screw with their user base.
The fact they keep thinking they can get away with this is ridiculous.
I haven't even been a subscriber that long either!
Agreed, I own a lot of the physical books. I love those for reference, but if I want to use this site to make nice character sheets based off of my books, just let me purchase to tools to do so. Makes no sense to inconvenience your player base
Jumping on to add my voice to the masses.
