I am cancelling my subscription if this change goes through, it is absolutely dumb that I cannot use DnD Beyond. If it comes down to it. I will be switching back to pen and paper.
So we're going to end up with dozens of listings for each spell when everyone starts creating home brew versions of the 2014 spells? If that's what we have to do to maintain 2014 backwards compatibility, then it's not really backwards compatible. Give us full access to the content we paid for and don't make us work for it.
I'm sorry, WOTC, you really s*&t the bed on this one.

Oh homebrew is next. And they'll blame "server load" as the reason.
Oh! The forced change despite not wanting to play with 2024 versions of content is horrendous! If it goes through, myself and just the others I play with are just going to have to leave the site- enjoyed using the resources here but this lack of a toggle is really just breaking of this service. I'd hope they're ready for the subscriptions being cancelled here.
A moment of silence for every Shepherd druid when this change is forced on them and all their conjure spells are ruined, and for all the high level campaigns that are about to have their years long games affected.
Why can't you guys just put a legacy toggle for all of it? Spells and items and status conditions included? You did it for the classes and races, so clearly it's possible instead of individually homebrewing every single item on the list for days. We payed for convenience just to have less convenience than playing with a piece of paper in hand? Paizo found a way to do it. Hell, a better VTT than yours figured out how to do it.
As someone who has been paying for the master sub as well as bought nearly every single book, including third party books, on this platform since many years now:
This is terrifying and absolutely horrible.
Neither me or my friends, who all crowdfunded to buy books together, have agreed to play 2024. We have campaigns ongoing for several years now. We love our current characters, and the current ruleset they reside under. Who thought it was a good idea to forcibly switch all of the rulesets ? What if I don't want to buy 2024 books, will my sheets simply be half broken ? I don't want this. /WE/ don't want this.
What if we still just want to continue playing by the 5e rules, with none of the one dnd updates ?? we bought those books, the entire REASON we use dnd beyond is for 5e content. And now you are forcibly changing that and making it unable to be used for it's literal original purpose ????
Also, from a pure consumer standpoint: the idea that my content could one day simply be disappeared without any real warning or options, doesn't exactly make me want to spend any more money in the future on this site. If it won't support 5e anymore, who is to say they won't decide to make one dnd obsolite in one year from now ?
I plan to file a complaint with the California Department of Consumer Affairs alleging fraud (advertising access to purchased content then revoking it, therefore a false assertion of availability of what was paid for) and a Small Claims Court action for the sum total that I have paid both in subscription fees and content from day one of my subscription if they do so, as well as participation in a class action lawsuit alleging the above, and I encourage others to do the same. If D&D Beyond, WotC and Hasbro do this, we should hurt them as badly as we can (within the bounds of law).
FYI, In California, class action waivers and similar are not enforceable no matter what's in the license or contract. https://www.courts.ca.gov/opinions/archive/A159528.DOCX (check out section IV, Unconscionability, and go Hmmm.)
Let's see if the mods try to suppress this information. If so, we'll add it to the evidence of malicious intent. Juries don't like cover-ups or interference with consumers advocating for their rights.
I've been subscribed for a few years and have a fairly active campaign. I used to take pride in collecting the spells, races, and subclasses in a piecemeal fashion so that my players would have choices.
I don't really want to toss this on my players to have to go to another site to figure out what spells and equipment they want to take so that I can homebrew everything. This should have been a free errata for things you already purchased or an opt in toggle.
It's going to be hard finding an alternative I like, but if this is how I have to do it, then so be it. Cancelling the renewal of my subscription. I have no idea how anyone thought this was going to go over well.
They should just make it separate like ALL THE OTHER CONTENT. That way you can turn 2024 edition on/off depending on what setup you're playing. Strahd is already a nightmare to DM with the so much of the content having never been added (i.e. gridded maps of areas where combat takes place and reusable grids for forest, lake and mountain combat, etc.). Now I have to un-Wonkafy 5.5 back to 5 just to make it kinda makes sense.
I understand they said that 5e content will still link back to it's proper rules, like statuses and conditions-- but still being forced to have the overall character sheet be structured for one dnd and you have to kinda fumble your way through to make it usable for 5e again.
and they're still releasing new 3rd party things, like griffons saddlebag. I'm was very excited for it ! but-- what if for example again, one of things in it references a 5e rule, like exhaustion. Which will no longer be properly supported on the character sheet. Then what ?

I am not happy with the changes as well. I plan to use both 2014 and 2024 content, and I rather have 2014 content be Legacy than outright removed.
On the bright side, at least we have communication this time, so we got some time to prepare and make homebrew copies. It is still an asinine move to make the player base jump through these hoops though.
The extremely slow rate of development of Beyond was not a good thing, but the stagnation was at least tolerable. With the removal of à la carte purchases and certain 2014 content, it feels like every step forward we made we are taking two steps back. I will stick with Beyond for now because it is still the most convenient tool, but it feels like it is getting less and less convenient.
The fact that we will no longer be able to access content we have paid for is unacceptable. Also any current running campaigns are going to be massively affected because of this.
One this is how their system has always worked for spells and items. Swordcoast content got updated in guides to everything and if you wanted the old content you had to homebrew it to reference it in the sheet.

they should have fixed the problem …
this isn’t a masterful evil plan to ger players to buy the new books. It’s years of tech debt causing the problem and either the devs don’t know a quick easy way to fix it in time or they don’t want to risk it without breaking something.
easy worknaround/band-aid is for someone on the dev team to just do a batch copy of all the spells & items into the homebrew content and let players add it to their personal homebrew instead of each individual person havin to do it themselves
Absolutely unacceptable move. I run multiple campaigns, including some for a public library, and there's no chance of them switching to the 2024 rules any time soon. What do I tell the group I'm currently teaching to play when their spells abruptly do something different? It's going to be confusing enough to work through the other changes to the character sheet when they've only just got them set up!
I'm also very concerned about how searching for items and spells is going to behave. Will we still find the 2014 versions of spells in the Spells page list (dndbeyond.com/spells)? Will we be able to find them with the search feature? Will I still be able to see them on the app's lists (which I prefer for looking up classes/items/spells/etc. on the go because it doesn't require an internet connection)? D&D Beyond is only useful because it's faster to look up info here than in a physical book. It's effectively pointless if what I look up here doesn't match the text in the book my player is holding. And I absolutely should not have to create and sort through homebrew just to easily confirm how Counterspell used to work or what Feeblemind even is--especially because homebrew doesn't show up in the app outside of a character sheet.
To be clear, I'm willing to give the 2024 update a go. There are things I like about it and things I don't and things I'll get used to eventually. But it took us years to get enough 2014 books to effectively play at our public library, and even under the best of circumstances, we're not swapping at the flip of a switch. That's beyond prohibitively expensive, and it's overwhelming for players. My original plan was to start incorporating spell and rule updates piecemeal whenever it made sense and seemed fun/unstressful for each group, but that's ... clearly not an option with this set-up.
Thanks DnDbeyond for the confirmation that anything we do buy from you can be removed whenever you feel like it. Guess I won't buy anything here again.
Dndbeyond… I really like what you used to be. But can you stop being an ass for 5 seconds? And by that I mean 5 years. You’ve embarrassed me enough for the next 5 years. In front of friends I’ve said oh yeah I use dnd beyond I think it’s pretty convenient. Do you understand how much shit may they give me for having known you? Hey dude how’s dnd beyond going lol.

This is certainly worth getting legal advice on; it would be quite a large class, too.

Yeah.....
Deleting the 2014 version stuff is a great way to convince people it is a bad idea using D&D beyond and paying for stuff on it.

Genuinely wondering about refunds at this point because I paid for the 2014 content. This makes me want to care about 2024 rules even less.
Wait something I forgot to add on:
What about third party content now ????
all of it is built with 5e in mind.
I understand they said that 5e content will still link back to it's proper rules, like statuses and conditions-- but still being forced to have the overall character sheet be structured for one dnd and you have to kinda fumble your way through to make it usable for 5e again.
