I don’t know if this is the right place to put this or not, but the way the steel defender updates on the character sheet is really confusing and inconsistent. The max HP and skills are updated automatically when you level up in the class, but the saving throws and attack actions do not even though the same feature increases all of these. It would almost be better all or nothing than to have to do math on the fly where applies.
The hit points of the Steel Defender are based on your class level but everything else you mentioned only goes up when your Proficiency score goes up.
Hit Points equal the steel defender’s Constitution modifier + your Intelligence modifier + five times your level in this class
Might of the Master. The following numbers increase by 1 when your proficiency bonus increases by 1: the defender’s skill and saving throw bonuses (above), the bonuses to hit and damage of its rend attack, and the number of hit points restored by its Repair action (below).
Edit: I just did a bit of testing and the Perception and Athletics skills do increase as Proficiency increases but none of the other stats seem to.
So I guess what I’m not getting is that when I add it to my character sheet, the hp is correct, but the other things aren’t increasing. The exception to this is that my entire proficiency bonus is added to the defender’s skills, rather than the increase of 1 that the skills should have. That’s why I’m confused rather than how the class actually works.
Well if you read the Might of the Master again you'll see that those values should go up by 1 every time your proficiency goes up by 1 - not just once.
Yeah, so when your proficiency goes to 3 from 2, the relevant skill should go up by 1 from where it is, but it currently is 3 higher than the base stat listed. But that isn’t even my point. My point is that the saves didn’t increase in the stat block at all and the skills increased by 3 even though they have the same proficiency increase.
I am reading it, just raising awareness of a display issue.
The only problem with the steel defender's skills that I can see is that it starts with a +6 athletics when it should be +4 like perception. Its skills increase by the appropriate amount (+1) every proficiency increase.
DDB's monster tools calculate saves automatically. They need to change it, it messes up a couple of things.
The actions section of a monster stat block can't have modifiers work on it, so that can't be automated (another thing they plan to update).
And it is definitely inconsistent that it would update only the skills and still mention that you need to add to them...
bumping this. The Steel Defender stats are not increasing properly. The attack mods don't seem to be increasing at all anywhere I can see. My character at level 4 has the same steel defender attack bonuses as at level 20. Please fix

The attack modifier can't be modified with the current system, they will need to make a new monster stat template and convert all existing monsters to it, then it will work.

Is it +6 cause it's adding it's STR bonus? I guess it's supposed to be factored in already.
