Either via an app or within the DDB features(outside of LFG), a location or store based opt-in system would be awesome. Example - Put in your zip code, select the stores in your area you would like to play in, and what role you are interested in taking over(DM, player, food pony, etc). This way, we aren't using the system for unsavory reasing(DDB Dating - no thanks), and we are tied to a store.
The following is my reasoning -
Many game and hobby stores have a Facebook, web page, or a physical bulletin board so that players can find one another. And, for the most part, they are pretty terrible at it. Schedules of events are often out of date, stores listed for Adventure's League haven't had a DM for it for months, and those that do have a proper listing for dnd night have no proper way to contact the DM or other players, even when I ask a clerk.
MeetUp is a big site that is pretty good for this, but many catch all gaming groups have very little entry for new players. Sure, they love new players, but only if they want to jam in an existing campaign with straight up strangers, sometimes at their house with their established home brew. It isn't a site that, I believe, can have the impact for new players as DDB can.
Also - When your LFG has people posting from Australia to America to New Zealand, its only really going to benefit the Skyping crowd.
I can solidly say I'd not use a LFG feature that required me to imply that I will run games at a store. I have too many materials that I'd not want to pack back and forth, I have a much larger table than my FLGS has and I don't want to go back to using a smaller table, and I can't help but use language (often accompanied by enthusiastic volume) that would not be considered appropriate for the in-store environment.
But it would certainly be a lot easier, or more likely, for me to find people in my local area to potentially invite to the games I run at my home, if I could search by something like zipcode or even state, when compared to the current read-every-thread-not-clearer-marked-as-somewhere-else to try and sort out who is looking for an online game and who isn't.
So I second the notion of doing something to improve the group/player-finding aspect of this forum/toolset.
I was just thinking about asking if the mods could subdivide the Looking for Players/Group by area. The current campaign I'm running has lost a couple of players due to work schedule changes. I have room at my table for a couple of new players for our regular Saturday game, however I'm certain if I post an add in the forum it will quickly be thrown back by several pages. If the LFG threads could be divided by Country, then State/Province/etc. we could just use our respective City name and Adventure/Campaign title as the Post title. Maybe online games could have a sub forum of their own, as online play doesn't require travel time to someones house or game store?
