If DND is going to partner or buy anything, it will probably have to be a product in early development, before a playerbase really starts digging into it.
My humble opinion is that, they could do an API or Modules for Foundry VTT would be the best. Foundry is better than Roll20 IMHO and you just need to partner up with Foundry or create an official module for it, and profit.
Don't get me wrong Foundry lovers, I know that there's a module in Foundry that enables you to import EVERYTHING from DNDBeyond to Foundry, but hey, if they created an official module and implement it for subscribers, wouldn't it be a win-win for all parties, except for the original module creator. Foundry will get more recognition, People will just buy DNDBeyond's books, players could roll on either DNDBeyond or Foundry's Character Sheet coz it has character import "natively", GMs could spend on only DNDBeyond excluding one time purchase of Foundry.
Because in the end, GMs will need to pay for Foundry (one time purchase), Purchase all the books on DNDBeyond (choose which they want) and finally, DNDBeyond's subscription. Currently, some GMs pay subscription for Roll20 and DNDBeyond for content sharing and need the books for both DNDBeyond and Roll20 ($$$$$$$$)
Dndbeyond is not going to partner up with a currently indirect, eventually direct, competitor because it brings nothing to the table for their business model.
In my humble opinion, until ddb rolls out their own virtual table top, it really would encourage their bottom line to unofficially suggest using a browser extension, like AboveVTTT mentioned in comments above, because that solution encourages it's userbase to stay on their site and not leave for another source provider.
Yeah, true enough. They do want the userbase to stay longer on DNDBeyond. It's true that my opinion is considered an option that won't happen. But yeah, I really do hope they roll out a VTT that enables us to use the books here. Pay only 1 site, for all things D&D
That is no use to those of us who play multiple TTRPG systems though. Which is why I live above VTT it is free.
Honestly to the OP I don't see this happening. I could see them partnering with a VTT officially before they actually create their own. There is no upside for WotC or DnDBeyond to spend all that money simply to compete with all the other more established and frankly more dynamic in terms of game selection VTTs already on the market. I do wish they would make some official extensions for all the major VTTs though. As Roll 20 and Foundry are not what I am looking for and frankly I feel like I am wasting my money on my DnDbeyond account now that in person playing is so rare.

What I can see happening is DND beyond opening up an API that they allow VTTs to integrate to, they have done it for there discord bot so it wouldn’t be hard

That makes total sense. I would love to see integration into say Fantasy Grounds Unity. But I’m not holding my breath. I know there is a fan made extension for roll 20 and for Foundry though. I would love to see Talespire hook up with DND beyond because their map system is amazing but they have no official ruleset. So dnd beyond would be amazing there.
It’s on their roadmap and probably 2022 based on dev update.
also AboveVTT is a plug-in that works seamlessly
Can I get a link to the roadmap? The one i found is dead.
The roadmap is defunct. It was being maintained by BadEye and it ended with his departure from the company.
I was going to say I thought that was the case. I just signed up for foundry a couple days ago and both my players and I love it. There's even a user add-on to import data and compendiums from D&D beyond based on what you own.

Dislike foundry, much prefer aboveVTT
Just want to second AboveVTT again. If one run WotC campaigns I can understand the appeal of Roll20 etc where everything comes set up and prepackaged.
But if one run own campaigns and have a Beyond sub, AboveVTT is the way to go imho. The technical prep time is minimal and I can focus on creating fun for my players, instead of studying script language and spending hours on making sure the dynamic lightning is just right. I'm a rpg nerd, not a tech nerd :-)
But only time will tell. As much as I hate to admit it as I have spent a fair bit of coin on this site their days may be coming closer to an end the closer we get to 2024.
Roll20 is old and clunky and constantly having issues on their platform, and Foundry is a lot more work to use for a DM. I really hope they make their own. This is just my opnion but have found a lot of people agree one plateform with everything would be best.
I started using Google Meets for all the voice and video, and Roll20 for VTT. Solved the problems we were having. Haven't tried Discord yet, but I will if Google becomes a problem.
Will add another thumbs up for Above VTT. We used roll20 for all of a Curse of Strahd campaign. I bought it in Beyond and didn't fancy forking out again for the roll20 content, so I did have to create tokens and things, but in general it always felt clunky.
Just come to the end of the campaign and found Above VTT. All the things I wish roll20 did it does. Pull in maps from Beyond, any map you have access to plus free ones, Pull in monsters direct from Beyond and show their stats, then roll directly from it. Show the conditions you have on your sheet on the token. Lots of great quality of life bits.
Its just really well thought out, it does exactly what it needs to do. Plus its just 1 person in their spare time, crazy.

You can also load your own maps really easily, I build them in INkarnate, Load them into google drive (make sure you set them as sharable) and then paste the link into AboveVTT, seconds to get the map in and a grid applied.
I use a discord channel to host my maps for aboveVTT. You can right click on the picture and copy the link for the map. Means I can keep all my maps on a hidden discord channel on my server

thats a good idea as well, I store all my campaign notes in Google drive so it makers sense for me but that option might be good as I have a couple of people in my game who play fro Mobile on Discord, so I could paste the map in the Map Channel so they can see it, and then link it to AboveVTT for the players with PC's
Even better shout, nice thinking, I'm lucky enough that my entire gaming group now has aboveVTT installed on their browsers. Only catch with doing it that way is that your group will get the map but won't see any token placement. I did toy with the idea of streaming my screen of aboveVTT over discord if I had players that couldn't get above though.

I have found Foundry to be the best IMO but Above is a very good option overall.
It seems WotC might be working on their own as well....https://techraptor.net/tabletop/news/dungeons-and-dragons-virtual-tabletop-is-coming-soon

I think AboveVTT is even better if you run WOTC campaigns. it’s not nearly as setup as Roll20 but it has all the maps and monsters ready to go

I've actually found that my players have had more trouble using Foundry than me. What area are you having trouble with?
