The best part about DMing is that if you will it, it can happen. What I would suggest if you do happen to delve into the homebrew world, take the bits and pieces that you want from other sources and reshape it into your own. As long as the players are having fun, that's what its all about! Best of luck on your DMing adventure, and welcome to the club!
As a fairly new DM who started with a homebrew world, I thoroughly recommend dropping the idea of making a world all by yourself.
That doesn't seem to be the question here, though. What you're talking about is bottom-up shared worldbuilding, which is certainly a perfectly fine style of world building. You can use the same method in a pre-existing setting as long as it has holes sufficient to fit in what you want to fit.
Or that you can punch holes into 😁😳. I’ve been playing and DMing for 40 years and during that time I’ve moved at least 15 times bringing my characters with me, when I decided I simply didn’t have enough time to manage an entire homebrew world I chose FR for a base but after 20 years it’s it’s own alternate reality with some huge differences my characters and others have created. Low level characters can and should have a fairly small impact on a world other than the shared world building described but high level characters should be altering the world in significant ways and should be becoming movers and shakers behind the scenes for new low level characters.after 40 years as a player and over 120 in world years my original characters are no strictly NPCs in my homebrew along with several characters from other players that I took copies of because of their place in my world. I’ve also left copies of characters behind with other DMs when they had major impacts in those worlds.
