I'm going to be in an upcoming campaign and I've always wanted to try the blood hunter. Part of it was watching CR and the other part was reading the abilities. The rites and maledicts sound like a lot of fun on paper. The DM allowed it so I've done the minimum as far as creation goes.
At this point all I really have is race (variant human) class (we're starting at 5th level 4 Blood Hunter 1 Fighter), not sure of fighting style yet, stats ( most relevant are an 18 in STR and 19 in Dex with increases/ASIs), and order (profane soul). I'm also wanting to play him as a front liner, so I took heavy weapon proficiency and chose a glaive as the weapon.
I don't have a name yet, but I am waiting for session 0 for the DM to tell me about the world.
A lot of the campaigns I joined in my first couple of sessions were characters made up on the law and I just took generic backstories and goals that I came up with on the spot. I just made my first character that I took time to develop and so far, he's really fun. But, I have no clue how to write a Blood Hunter. I've also never played a melee character, normally I am the token cleric or some other spellcaster (if that matters for backstory).
I don't want to make an edgy character with no real depth, but it seems like a lot of blood hunters (from videos on YT and on popular sites like Game Rant) are either around tragic backstories or are vampire hunters.
Does anyone have any advice on how to start a backstory for a Blood Hunter without it getting cliché and/or edgy? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Big game hunter. Vampire hunter characters tend to get bogged down with serious gravitas and acting like they're on a mission from god(s). Everything goes over the top with justifying the obsessive lengths they'll go to when hunting vampires - usually for some kind of revenge. I agree that's well-trod territory.
The way I'm thinking of it, the big game hunter isn't on some kind of compulsive mission or roaring rampage of revenge. The big game hunter wants the challenge and the thrill. They've picked up some things in their travels from other experienced hunters and groups on the fringes of civilization. Now they use that to hunt the truly exotic game. Lions and tigers and bears aren't cutting it for this sort of thrill-seeker. So they move on to using these new techniques to hunt things that go bump in the night. Not because they want to make the night safer or whatever. No, that's not their motivation. They're just looking for the next trophy to put on the mantle.
Rather than falling into the dark, edgy, cynical tropes they can be played as experienced, confident, and likeable in a rakish kind of way. I'm thinking something kind of like Rick O'Connell, Brendan Fraser's character in The Mummy (1999). Dashing, up for a challenge, has seen some stuff but isn't easily scared, and ultimately not motivated by grimdark tragic backstory.
Wow. I've never thought about a big game hunter, but that sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I think it may be fun to have the a mishmash of Rick and Hammerlock might work. It will depend on the DM's world but I think I can still incorporate game hunting into the character.
Thank you very much!
