Whatever I play next. I have no clear favourites. I do like having a lot of skill and/or tool proficiencies though, so without context I likely gravitate somewhat more towards rogues, bards or rangers and half-elves, lizardfolk or tabaxi.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
I'm a sucker whenever it comes to D&D. Like, there's more interesting stuff, but I love Fighters, Paladins, and until I learned they didn't have heavy armour, Rangers. It's all about being a shiney knight. Boring class? I don't care, I'm a knight. Don't get me wrong, Sorcerer, Cleric, and Warlock are all pretty high up there for me too, but it's hard to beat just being a pretend knight.
Background? Again, I'm a sucker. I love Marine because you get both useless Vehicle proficiencies. Any background really that does something weird and related like that (Charlatan gets both Disguise and Forgery kit; Far Traveler gets Perception and Insight) is up my alley.
Race: Nobody is going to like this answer, but the Kor. What are the Kor you ask? They're a playable race from the free WotC PDF Planeshift Zendikar. Sure, it was made by the M:tg team instead of the D&D team, but it's still WotC, just as AL is WotC, but not D&D to spite 100% being D&D. They're nomading climbers who speak in sign language and pretend to be Halflings. If not them, then Aasimar for healing, Bugbears for Reach, or Humans because I'm basic.
Feat: Polearm Master, Heavy Weapon Master, or Tavern Brawler. Polearm Master gives you the benefits of two-weapon fighting without two weapons. Heavy Weapon Master helps your shiney knight tank. Taven Brawler makes you proficient in weapons like: Dead Goblin, a table, the Wizard's Spellbook (hey, it's his fault for dropping it), glass bottles, the Rogue, shields for punching, and chairs.
If I was asked to identify my single favourite race/class/background combination it would have to be Drow/Hexblade/Urban Bounty Hunter.
Multiclassing always feels awkward for me so I tend not to do it.
Drow have access to the Drow High Magic feat, which is what I always take at level 4, for on demand detect magic, and once a day levitation and dispel magic, which help bolster Warlock's lack of spells and slots. Hexblade allows me to play as a melee fighter or as ranged DPS (which is still the most efficient use of the Warlock). Urban Bounty Hunter gives the stealth, insight, and thieves' tools proficiencies so between Elf (perception), Warlock (arcana and investigation) and UBH (insight) I have proficiency in the most commonly used skill checks. If I want to make a more "face" character I take the beguiling influence and mask of many faces invocations at level 2 to give on demand disguise self, and proficiency in persuasion and deception.
Second would probably be the High Elf/Bladedancer/Urban Bounty Hunter.
I like flexible characters who can deal with every aspect of the game.
I love Goblins, Kobolds and Lizardfolk. I really like the idea of being *alien*, and go to stupid lengths to work out some social quirks.
e.g. my Goblin thought words like "I" or "you" were incredibly intimate, things you only said to family or lovers, so referred to himself in the third person, and would use phrases like "this one" to refer to others. He'd be really weirded out by other people using those words. He also thought it natural that Goblins were seeking a "magnificent" death, but thought it straight up wrong that long-lived races would go into danger - so would defend the other players with slightly horrified zeal. Also genuinely thought smooth-skinned flat-toothed creatures were absolutely hideous. This one is stupid thing, to go into such danger! It could live thousand years! Ugly stupid thing, stand behind Mock.
Lizards can lick their own eyeballs and be brutally logical. Kobolds can be cheerful murder-children with no clue how non-Kobold society works.
For classes, I do not care, they're all great fun. I will cheerfully fill whatever gap the party needs, or failing that will get D&D Beyond's random character generator to tell me what to do.
Favorite race is Tiefling by a country mile. Next is Human. I might play something else from time to time, but for any campaign that will last, I will most likely play a Tiefling or maybe Human.
Classes are different. I have a hard time picking just one, but I can narrow it down to either Rogue, Warlock, or Wizard.
Race:Half Elf. They're great. Darkvision, advantage on resisting charm (and immunity to magically induced sleep), 2 proficiencys, 3 languages (common, elvish, and one of your choice) and a Plus 2 to charisma and plus 1 to two other abilitys of your choice. They work with basically any class, but are definitely great charisma casters. (A large number of my characters are half elf) (Though the two races that give feats are great choices for the extra versatility, especially custom lineage, which lets you have darkvision and a feat) (I also love the Changling and Reborn. Changling for the roleplay potential and racial alter self, and reborn for the wide variety of options for them and their backstory, and their racial abilitys are amazing. I also enjoy warforged,Tabaxi and lizardfolk for similar reasons)
Class? Wizards are fun for all the spells they can learn, and bards can be very interesting characters, and Fighters give lots of options for combat style. But honestly, choose whatever works for your character. Your imagination is the limit. For example, I have a human looking teifling whos backstory would suggest they were a draconic sorcerer, but they're actually a wildfire druid, cause I thought the wildfire spirit and druid spells would be a better fit for the character.
A non-monastic Stout Halfling Monk who starts off as nobody special at level 1—maybe even less than nobody special.

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.

I had something similar with my Goblin character I played a while back. Although in his case he referred to everyone by a descriptive nickname, because that's functionally how Goblins would get their names. It led to something funny where one player had a lot of bad rolls in our first session so he exclusively referred to her character as "Fumbles" until she finally told him, in-character, to stop calling her that.

I really like playing the wood elf shadow monk/rouge combo, Cute but deadly.
