I am trying to figure out if chain mail armor is basically a hauberk and gauntlets, or does it also include the leggings and coif also? I am wanting to draw a character portrait in Profantasy.
Made of interlocking metal rings, chain mail includes a layer of quilted fabric worn underneath the mail to prevent chafing and to cushion the impact of blows. The suit includes gauntlets.
This would be one of those things left up to your imagination. There's no rules about it.
I would suggest it probably doesn't include gauntlets, because you can get magical gauntlets and wear them with any armor, or with no armor at all. But even that is a pretty weak argument. You could probably remove whatever gauntlets are included in your armor, and replace them with the magical ones.
Yeah, the fashion of any of the armors is really up to your imagination. It can be historically informed or not ... I've seen some renderings of characters wearing basically a chainmail catsuit, I don't know how possible that would be realistically; but illustrations are evocative not mechanically binding.

In my imagination, chain mail equipped characters have a padded upper garment, leggings and coif. The have a chain shirt, A chain coif, and chain leggings. They could have leather boots or plate sabbatons. They have gauntlets. They could have plate pauldrons, a plate gorget, a plate helmet and/or plate gauntlets. They also have a great coat even if it is just a brown or off white garment.

Beyond that, it's whatever you want it to be
