Hey all! I'm interested in making a rune knight character and I'm wondering what multiclass to go for with them.
The concept I have thus far is somewhat of a silly one (We've been tasked with making over-the-top heroes), I plan on running a Goblin called Dragon-Boy, who will wear an oversized mask (which he grows into when enlarged by Giant Might). I also intend for him to lug a large weapon around, which he can't use when small. Small Dragon Boy will be stealth and ranged weapons, giant Dragon-Boy will be hulk smash.
Anyway, I'm trying to work out what will work well for a multiclass for a rune knight. I'm contemplating a Hunter Conclave Ranger to use Favoured Foe and colossus slayer to deal out an extra 1d4+1d6+1d8 damage on a hit (assuming the creature is wounded), plus 2d6 for the fire rune if I'm facing something hefty. Alternatively, I was considering monster hunter ranger. I think the crazy goblin touring the wild to hunt big beasties is the sort of aesthetic/backstory I'm aiming for, I like the idea that he's underestimatable!
what other ideas would work well with the rune knight?
The weapon thing is arguable. A lot of people would claim that because the weapon and you both change size, it is still too big for you to us. The mere fact that it specifies everything you carry and also increases the damage makes it clear that the intent is for you to use your standard load-out, not a special one just for when you are bigger. That said, the increase itself is not that much, I can see a DM letting you get away with it.
The following is thematic based, not optimizer:
If you want to stay with the Hulk theme, consider either Druid (wildshape into a Bear is pretty close to Hulk) or Barbarian for RAGE!!!!
Of those two options, I personally prefer Barbarian. You already have a make yourself into a bigger thing going on, no need to double down. As you are planning on being stealthy while small, no armor makes sense. And raging definitely goes with a big ol weapon.
I can definitely see a tiny little Goblin walking into a bar saying "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." and then becoming a Large creature the first turn, then entering a rage the 2nd turn.
